Why did men wear spats?
Did Roman women wear brassieres?
What held up those huge skirts? You'll find answers to these questions and many more in Fashion Through the Ages. This stylish oversized gift book includes twelve lavish full-color interactive spreads that present fashion's highlights. From the Roman Empire to the 1960s, each of the twelve spreads features: * A man, a woman, a boy, and a girl dressed in outfits of the era.
* Lift-up flaps revealing all the layers of clothing (each with a tiny caption).
* A gatefold page with both a historical and a fashion overview of the era.
* Margin illustrations showing accessories such as shoes, hats, and jewelry. Chock-full of fashion history and stunning costumes by an award winning illustrator, Fashion Through the Ages is a must-have for every budding trend-setter. Margaret Knight teaches the history of fashion at the Royal Victoria & Albert Museum in London. She has been an advisor to the BBC on many of their period productions. Kim Dalziel is a fashion illustrator for British newspapers and magazines, including British Vogue. Margaret Knight and Kim Dalziel live in London.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-8-In this lift-the-flap book, Knight literally peels off the layers of Western clothing styles from the Roman Empire through the 1960s. Twelve colorful two-page spreads are each introduced with a double-sided gatefold that gives historical background on the era and descriptions of its clothing. Each illustration features a man, a woman, a boy, and a girl standing against a period background. When lifted, the flaps depicting the garments reveal the next layer of clothing, often down to the underwear. A description of the clothing is printed on the back of each flap. The margin around the large picture is filled with smaller drawings detailing hairstyles, shoes, and accessories. The only drawback to this unique and fascinating book is its fragile design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book if U Love Fashion, April 9, 2000
This review is from: Fashion through the Ages: A Dress-Up Lift-the-Flap Book with Portfolio (Hardcover)
This book has wonderful illustraitons with lift up flaps that give you information on the outfit. For every Era they show what a woman would wear, what a man would wear, what a girl would wear and what a boy would wear. They do more than just describe one layer of clothes. If you lift up a shawl for example they will describe it. Then you lift up the dress and read the discription then you lift up the petticoats and read the discription. An added bonus is that there are facts and mini drawings all around tha pages borders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Time Frame Illustration, May 17, 2011

This book was perfect for what I wanted to use it for, to provide a time frame of history for my young child. Fashion has a bit more flare than wars, plus the "fold out" clothes make the book even more interesting for a kid.
