One of Susan Sirkis' first and very best books, April 6, 2004
This review is from: Fashions Eighteen Thirty-One to Eighteen Thirty-Five (Wish Booklets Series) (Paperback)
I'd bought this years ago because I was intrigued by Sirkis' patterns not only for a full and detailed wardrobe of doll clothes from the 1830s, but also her instructions for carving a jointed wooden doll to wear them. Having aquired the doll and sewn some of the clothes in this volume since then, I still enjoy turning the pages and planning my next project.
Sirkis' instructions are quite good, and her illustrations are clear and beautiful. But well-developed sewing skills are a must, in order to fit her patterns to your doll, which is no doubt of a slightly different shape and size than the one for which these patterns are drafted.
The designs included in this volume are quite authentic to the era, yet still visually appealing --- a challenge, given the awkwardness of much of 1830s fashion to the modern eye. I found that reproductions of the era's fashion plates (Dover Publications has a good book of them) were useful in suggesting authentic colors and trims.
If you enjoy dollmaking, fine needlework, or historical fashions I highly recommend this book, as well as all of the other excellent books in the "Wish booklets" series. (I'd particularly suggest the 1870s, 1820s, 1800-1810, and 1860s volumes.

Gorgeous!, August 13, 2001
This review is from: Fashions Eighteen Thirty-One to Eighteen Thirty-Five (Wish Booklets Series) (Paperback)
I got this book to research costuming for my dollhouse dolls. It's always pre-1835 in the dollhouse and this book has made me wonder if my dollhouse needs bigger armoirs. Since buying this book I have been inspired to create elaborate, extensive wardrobes for the dolls and I am having the time of my life!
