Editorial Reviews

Review

The eighteen quilts in this book are stylish, simple projects using large pieces, strip piecing, and quick techniques. They're easy enough for beginners and interesting enough for experienced quilters who want to make a quick quilt. Sara's quilts are often made of large scale or novelty prints, but she suggests alternate fabrics for your inspiration. --Fons & Porter Easy Quilts Magazine

Hey, with a title like that, I know two things right off: first, I'm going to like it because I do enjoy a project that can be easily done in my lifetime. Second, the author is a quilter who understands my needs for "instant gratification" . . . blocks that work up quickly, and that are user friendly when it comes time to put them together into a quilt!

This book would be excellent for wantobes and veteran quilters alike; no one is immune to the "make it quick and easy" bug. Wantobes need projects that are simple enough for their skill set, but turn out to be quilts that really look great! Veterans can always use a easy pattern for a quilt-in-a-rush situation, whether it's for a birthday you almost forgot, or a call for quilts for a charity. Fast and Fun First Quilts will be your go-to manual for all of the above!

The author, Sara Deipersloot, utilized two techniques to make eighteen projects that all look different - no cookie-cutter quilts here.

First, she shows us projects that utilize large blocks in simple settings - like this one, where pieced sashings alternate with large squares of a focus fabric. The second strategy the author uses is to take a focus fabric and let it shine in a large center section, and then make pieced blocks to go all around it.

I believe that you will enjoy this book and be inspired by it, no matter your quilting skill level!

The cover got my attention right off. I am a "NUT" about pinwheels and that was the quilt that was on the cover. There are 18 quilts all together and each uses bright colors and fabrics that have an interesting print such a snowmen or camping print or big, bold flowers.

The projects start out with a blurb about the quilt and a colored photo, quilt and block sizes. There are lots of graphics and easy to follow written instructions making it simple to create the blocks. There is even a suggested fabric option for making it in another colorway. The only downside to this book is that the "dreaded quilt as desired" is the only suggestion for quilting the project.

The book ends with a four-page spread on techniques and short bio about the author. I can wait to make the pinwheel quilt and several of the other ones as well.

I loved the pictures - most taken in the Pacific Northwest, a reminder of the beauty of my youth. I made one of the quilts from the book, but used different fabrics, I found the visual guide difficult to "read" for cutting the fabrics. At one point I used a jeweler's loop to see the different fabrics used in the strips, many were similar and since there wasn't a drawn out graph with A, B, C, etc. labeling it got confusing. I prefer to cut all my pieces, lay them out and then sit down to sew, I found that I needed to cut each piece as I went along. As I said the pictures are delicious and I am sure I will make some other quilts from this book, but it took some real noodling.

First up - a confession- I really like Sara Diepersloot's work. Oh, another confession - I was scared to death and it took me years to take the plunge and quilt. Now I find it hard to stop. So yes, I love this book. Subtitled '18 Projects for Instant Gratification', this book provides you with projects that are easy, different and just what you need as a beginner. You could, however use this book on any level, so it is not confined to the novice. There is a grounding in quilt making techniques at the back of the book. Projects include squares, strips, a basic pinwheel (front cover), stripes, log cabin and much more. Quilts of all sizes plus table runner. Easy to follow instructions and great photography. There's enough variety and versatility to start you off quilting and to keep you going for a long time. This review first appeared on yarnsandfabrics website.

I love any quilting book that inspires me to quilt. This book does just that. I accumulated a lot of ideas from it in my notes. (I keep a quilting Journal and when I get an idea I jot it down, or I would forget and never return there again.) This book is one that I could look at the patterns and turn or move a block around or reverse them to make them my own. I don't like to copy anyone's pattern unless its in a kit.

These are quilts I actually adapt to my fabric stash and make! Inspirational photos, clear and accurate directions. I love this book and highly recommend it. If you're beyond intermediate skills, it won't offer you much, but for beginners and advanced beginners, it's worth every penny.

I bought this because it is required by our local quilt shop for any of their classes and it is much cheaper here than through the shop. The book is not the most impressive. I believe there are better patterns elsewhere!

I've always been intimidated by quiltmaking but this book gives me the confidence to try it again. The projects are beautiful and look more time-consuming and detailed than they really are. While it isn't a "how to quilt" book, it is appropriate for quilters of any level and basic sewing skills are assumed. The idea is to have projects that can be done quickly by using large pieces of fabric, strip quilting rather than intricate smaller pieces, and simple techniques.

There are many beautiful color photos to inspire a crafter, plus many drawings and diagrams that accompany clear instructions. Another feature I appreciated in this book is that the author gives alternatives to some of the projects with suggestions for different color combinations, fabric designs, etc. For example, with the valentine theme quilt, a suggestion for a baby quilt done in different colors and fabrics is shown.

The 18 projects in this book will inspire any quilter and serve as a springboard to creating an original quilt using the techniques taught.

I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited, nor was a positive review required.
