This book took so long to arrive I had forgotten I had ordered it, once, in the distant mists of time, last year. Had I had a chance to see the contents before buying it I would have declined to purchase. This is NOT to say it is a bad book - it is not - but it is not what I wanted.

If you are new to computer recording (in 2010 - there must be a few newcomers each year) and new to Cubase (ditto) then it could be very useful as it covers the basics in some detail.

For me, who has used Cubase since Pro24 (its predecessor) and who has designed and built and run studios, and engineered and produced in them, much of the content was not informative at all.

I had read the title as a 'Fast guide to *Cubase 5*' and I bought it just after Cubase 5 was announced expecting it to detail the new features of Cubase 5 viz-a-viz Cubase 4. In fact although there is some coverage of the new features, there is only a little Cubase 5 specific material.

An example or two:

- recording in Cubase gets 11 pages (and this could apply to anything from VST on)
- Project Window 10 pp (ditto)
- MIDI recoding and editing 51 pp (ditto)

The only Cubase 5-specific material in the 51 pp last mentioned is:

- one paragraph on VST Expression

In general, the new Cubase 5 features do get mentioned (3 pages on Variaudio, a page or two on the new drum features, and so on) but not in the detail that I wanted.

So, whether this is a good buy for you depends on your skill and experience level. If starting from scratch or new to Cubase or digital audio workstations, it could be a good, or very good buy. For me it was not. Had I researched further earlier I would have realised this; it's not the author's fault.

Well unless you have extra $9 grand in your life to certify yourself and learn how to use Cubase in class, this book would be the next best way to learn it. Hope this helps.
