About the Author

Dr. Thomas Cooper is currently a tenured Professor of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College, and was recently guest Professor at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and Union University. His most recent research was at Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and five other leading universities. He has taught at Harvard University, the University of Hawaii, the University of Maryland, Middle Tennessee State University and Temple University. As founder and co-publisher of Media Ethics magazine, author of seven books and over one hundred and twenty other publications, Dr. Cooper actively addresses topics in new media, communications, journalism, speech, ethics, and the arts. Tom was an assistant speechwriter in the White House and was one of the first producers of audio spacebridges among U.S. and Soviet communication professionals. As a graduate student at the University of Toronto, Tom was mentored by Marshall McLuhan and served as one of his assistants.  With Dr. Clifford Christians, Dr. Cooper co-convened the first Media Ethics Summit Conference in 1987 and the second Media Ethics Summit Conference in 2007. Cooper has won or raised nearly one million dollars in awards, grants and fellowships, and has been selected a King, East/West, Massey, and Young Fellow. He received his B.A. (magna cum laude) from Harvard and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. An international speaker at the University of Moscow, Oxford, Harvard and other leading institutions, he is also a musician, poet, playwright and Black Belt who founded the Association for Responsible Communication, which was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Dr. Cooper has done extensive research on the role of media in our lives. The author explains how he went on a month long "media fast" in 1989 and how it changed his life. He stopped watching television and movies, listening to radio and CDs, and reading books, magazines and newspapers. Web sites and the flurry of new media were not yet in the picture.

In the two decades which have followed, Dr. Cooper has guided and assisted thousands of students, groups and colleagues with their own media blackouts (no media), practical fasts (as little media as is practical), and media diets (selective media intake).

Dr. Cooper has studied media addiction in children and adults. The cravings for the mass media stimulus may be traced to it's instant numbing of real-life problems and the provision of emotional "highs," a sense of security, surrogate companionship, heightened sensuality and a variety of other sensations.

An entire chapter in this book is devoted to group fasting. Dr. Cooper shares his experiences in leading groups, families and classes on mass media fasts. There are specific guidelines for group leaders and some tips on how to measure the results of the fast.

Most people think of food when they hear the word "fast". Dr. Cooper has taken fasting to a new level. He shares his academic research with his readers but it is written in a manner that a layman can understand.

What would you do with your time if you had NO computer, NO television, NO movies, NO radio, NO cds or dvds, NO books, NO magazines and NO newspapers. Can you even imagine what your life would be like?

I believe the purpose of this book is to encourage you to THINK about how mass media is changing your choices and lifestyle. It is not practical for most people to eliminate all media from their lives, but perhaps it is time to take a look at our priorities.

I recommend this book to anyone who is seeking the truth in a world of "fast media".

What a great way to positively change your thinking and your life. It looks like the book is just for readers who have time to go on a media fast which is impossible for me right now. But it turns out the book is for everyone who' either into media or into life, or possibly both. So for people like me who don't have the ability to take a media fast right now, you can also go on a media "diet" or just keep your media habits but look at them in an entirely different way. All kinds of interesting topics are covered such as whether we can regain original thinking, how we are programmed to think we are not programmed, how to use this book in classes, with families, with other groups and lots of stuff which is not obvious from the cover. The book seems to really make you think so I can see how it would be used by academics but it is also fun ...with something for everyone. Cooper seems to have lived with the Amish, Native Americans, and other groups which are "no media" or "low media" consumers and he compares the pros and cons of their societies to ours. Very interesting. I highly recommend this book. Sundancer

I read Dr. Cooper's book when if first came out and was immediately conflicted and impressed. I identify with being overwhelmed keeping up with emails, responding to social media and finding constant opportunities for distraction. I set aside each January to go on a media diet, not quite a full fast. I do severely restrict my media intake. After three years this has become an essential part of my starting each year - along with setting new boundaries for the kind and amount of media I consume. Dr. Cooper's book is a must read if you find you are even slightly addicted to your many devices.

Although the author doesn't even explicitly mention "mindfulness" once in the book, this is one of the best works I've read on the benefits and difficulties of practicing mindfulness, and of the necessity of fasting from toxic media to achieve it. Very insightful and practical, and very well written. I particularly love the author's "five freedoms" that can be attained with media fasting: freedom of thought, of emotion, of action, of identity, and of perspective.
