***AWESOME INDIES ***:- Elizabeth Jasper
I've read Pam Howe's trilogy and thoroughly enjoyed them all. This book puts a different emphasis on the music business, shifting from the more usual fame and fortune scenario and instead concentrating on the musician as an ordinary guy working in a fairly flaky industry.
Yes, our hero is just as talented as the Raiders in previous stories, but instead of all the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll we are used to, the emphasis is on the tensions between home life and work, the precarious nature of working in such a business from the point of view of earning a living in the lower ranks, and the pressures of changing family relationships as the years go by.
Totally captivating, absolutely un-put-down-able, and written in Ms Howe's usual easy, engaging style, this is yet another great read. Enjoy!

***INDIE E BOOK REVIEW*** : - Debbie Bennett
I’ve read several other books by Pam Howes, so picked this up knowing exactly what I was getting. I wasn’t disappointed. There’s no Darcy in this book – no bronzed Adonis waiting in the wings to sweep our Mandy off her feet and make her realise what she’s been missing. Just Rod, the man she turned down as a teenager, who still hasn’t really grown up despite his own marriage and children, and spends as much of his life as he can on the road as a professional singer with a band. And yet middle-aged sex sizzles, as Mandy and Rob embark on an affair that can only bring heartache to everyone involved.
This isn’t chick-lit – for a start the characters are older with established lives, but it’s also deeper than chick-lit and has the knack of making you re-evaluate your own life in the context of Mandy’s turmoil. Brief snatched moments of pleasure become days and then weekends; small lies become big lies as lives are falling apart around her. And when the emotional fallout crosses several generations, when friends and loved ones are battling illness, is it selfish to want what’s best for yourself?Thoroughly recommended. A romance with depth and passion, but one that also makes you think.

PAM HOWES is also the author of the ROCK'N'ROLL ROMANCE series of novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Novel About Real Life. June 29, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Books by Pam Howes always grab the reader by the heart and refuse to let go till the final page has been turned. Ms. Howes possesses a rare ability to share emotion without having recourse to melodrama. She's a sensible, engaging writer with a rare sense of pace - a cadence not unlike that of a musician. Her prose is not mannered or pretentious. It's clean, jaunty and direct.

Fast Movin' Train is real life in a book. It's a story about long-married people falling in love outside their marriages and trying to overcome daunting obstacles in order to be together. Both the woman and the man are torn and guilt-ridden about what damage they know they must do in order to preserve their precious love. Will they finally be able to break the shackles binding them to the past and find the happiness we know they deserve?

In order to find out if Mandy and Rod can hack their way through the jungle of complications implicit in their quest for release from society's bonds, I suggest you get yourself a copy and dive into this captivating novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to forget, a very emotional read December 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What can I say? This book made me smile and cry a little. Every once in a while you come across a book that you have to put down because of an overload of emotions. This was one of those. Pam Howes shows us love against all odds and how, when two people really want to put in the effort, things can work. Even if it's in ways unexpected.
The way she sets scenes and conveys emotions is something many authors can only dream about. Her imagery and ways of drawing the reader in the heads and hearts or her characters makes this book worth reading not once or twice but more often. And this is coming from someone who hates to read true romantic books. In this one however the author held me captivated by the lives and love of her main characters as if it were me. And by doing so she had me living this romance and feeling everything the main character did.

My only complaint would be that the ending came a bit too abrupt. I would have liked to know how matters with Mike and Jennie were resolved and if Rod and Mandy truly lived happily ever after.

I know I'm repeating myself, but I absolutely fell in love with this book and will certainly look for the other titles this author has available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get on the train and read this book March 15, 2012

Pam always writes about difficult subjects, but what she writes about is shared my many. Her ability to convey very profound thoughts and feelings in the way that she does, makes this book even more remarkable. Not only is this a wonderful novel to read, but the subject that she tackles takes us in to unknown territory in a very sensitive yet compelling way. The relationship between Mandy and Rod is unforgettable and so intoxicating. This is a book I highly recommend, I couldn't put it down.

More About the Author

Pam Howes was born in Cheshire. She is a retired Interior Designer who began writing seriously about fourteen years ago. The idea for her first novel, set in the sixties, was inspired by her time as a teenager, working in a local record store and hanging around with musicians who frequented the business. That first novel evolved into a series set in the fictional town of Pickford, based on her home town of Stockport. Three Steps to Heaven; 'Til I Kissed You; Always On My Mind; Not Fade Away, and That'll Be The Day, follow the lives and loves through the decades of fictional Rock'n'Roll band The Raiders. Pam is a big fan of sixties music and it's this love that compelled her to write the series. A stand-alone true-life romance, Fast Movin' Train, set in the nineties, was published in early 2012. A new series of Fairground Romances, set in the sixties, begins with Cathy's Clown, to be followed by Ruby Tuesday late 2014. Pam is mum to three adult daughters, grandma to seven assorted grandchildren, and roadie to one musician partner. She still lives in Cheshire and also writes short stories and poems which have appeared in charity anthologies and online e-zines. She is currently involved in raising awareness of her home town's musical background with campaigns to have Blue Plaques erected on the walls of local clubs, The Manor Lounge and The Sinking Ship, where the likes of The Walker Brother's, The Who, and Jimi Hendrix played live; now closed, but still firmly in the hearts of Stockport's recycled teenagers.

Update: By popular demand, there will be a sixth Raiders' novel. You Better Move On will be published in spring 2015.

All books are available in Kindle format, paperback, and Fast Movin' Train is also available as an audio book.
