Twenty one years later, I still remember it.,
By Denise (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fast Sam, Cool Clyde, and Stuff (Paperback)
Back in the early 80s, when I was having a hard time reading and nothing could keep my interest, I found this book in a used book store. Something about it caught my attention. I read it and fell in love with the characters. It helped create a love for reading that I never thought I'd have. I never forgot the title and have been meaning to get myself and my niece a copy of it for a while. I'm thrilled that I've found it and I highly recommend it to any young reader.

Fat Albert with an edge,
By Andre M. "brnn64" (Mt. Pleasant, SC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fast Sam, Cool Clyde, and Stuff (Paperback)
I read this book as a child in the seventies and enjoyed it at the time. Still hold up good nearly three decades later. This portrayal of ghetto life in the 70s among young people is about as accurate as it was funny. Kinda reminds you of a preteen "Cooley High" or Fat Albert with an edge, as these kids deal with realistic problems of drugs, sex, and violence. Overall, a good example of the resilience of young people without getting overly downbeat.

A Different From Book From My Time,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Fast Sam, Cool Clyde, and Stuff (Hardcover)
This book takes place in New York City were you can get put in jail for just giving a lady back here purse; Strange? Fast Sam Cool Clyde and Stuff is by Walter Dean Myers and it's a good book to read. This book is about some neiborhood friends in the seventies dealing with different issue during there life. Before you read the first chapter, read the prologue because it tells how the friends met, how Stuff moved there on 116th st, Stuffs real name, and how Stuff got his name. I know you don't know who Stuff is but he's the narrator and the main character of this book.Fast Sam Cool Clyde and Stuff is a good book because it makes you laugh out loud because Walter Dean Myers wrote this book for children of all ages to read. You should read this book because it can teach you something you did not know before that is the same since the seventies. The book is about a neiborhood friends growing up and learning different things.

Fast Sam, Cool Clyde and Stuff,

This review is from: Fast Sam, Cool Clyde, and Stuff (Paperback)
What an awesome book. This novel takes place in New York City during the 70's. It is very entertaining. I am a teacher in an inner city school and I had my students read this. They literally would laugh aloud while reading it. Although it takes place during the 70's, there are still issues in which my students could relate. I definitely recommend this novel to middle school children, both urban and suburban. Hats off to Walter Dean Myers!

One of the best!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Fast Sam, Cool Clyde, and Stuff (Paperback)
I thought the book was pretty good. Wasn't the best book I ever read, but it wasn't bad either. At some points in the book, it confused me. It did because one chapter would end and then I would start the next chapter but, this chapter would have a whole different point. Other than that, the book was really good. The book takes place in New York City. This book is about a group of boys dealing with everyday problems for them. I loved the way the author put you into the book. I also loved how funny the book was. If you are looking forward to read this book, I would definitely consider reading the prologue first. You should read the prologue first because it tells how all of the friends on 116th street. I hope this book makes you laugh just as much as it made me. Good luck in your readings.

This is a good book!,

This review is from: Fast Sam, Cool Clyde, and Stuff (Paperback)
You should read Fast Sam, Cool Clyde, & Stuff. It explains what can happen to people who use drugs. When Stuff, Sam, & Clyde joined the basketball team it said some rules of basketball. The teenagers are really funny. They are happy most of the time because of a club they made called the 116th Street Good People. That is why you should read this book.

A Must-have for Bibliotherapy!,
By Natarielle Powell (Savannah, Georgia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fast Sam, Cool Clyde, and Stuff (Paperback)
I have previously read Walter Dean Myers mysteries, so when I began this book, I anticipated a similar experience. However, this book is unlike any of his others, in my opinion. It is certainly a treat to read, but the subject matter and the characters are different. This book is centered around the lives of a group of adolescents growing up in New York. Myers engulfs the reader into their world and captivates the reader with how he expresses their thoughts and discussions. These young people discuss grief, sex, failure, drug addiction, rivalry, pride, embarrassment, goals, education, college, and a host of other topics. They form a sort of support group for each other to help with dealing with tough issues. I thought this spoke volumes to the brilliance and caring nature of young people, even though they are not always credited with those characteristics. I began reading this book to review it as a possible text for a Bibliotherapy class for middle school students, but after reading it, I would recommend it to middle school students and parents. It will definitely give both groups some things to think about and discuss.

Finding your way through life. - Urban Teenager,
By
This review is from: Fast Sam, Cool Clyde, and Stuff (Paperback)
The book reads like a diary and covers many topic 12-15 year old kids might experience growing up. A good read with urban flavor. The setting in New York City in one of the poorer areas of the town. Things many not be the best but these kids stick together and try to do the right thing. They end up deal with issues of drugs, sex and problems with there families. It about growing up and making the best out of what you have. The book covers many controversial topics and many of the discussions in the books do not use proper English but for any kid who already reads well, this book could help guide their teenage years.
-Overall I enjoyed reading this book.
