Strong in Core & Weak in Windows,
By David (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A+ Fast Track: Core/Hardware and DOS/Windows Exams (Textbook Binding)
I took the test last month (Dec '99). (scored 90% on DOS/WIN and 98% on Core). I realized that the book went into great detail on stuff that wasnt needed for the exam and didnt cover enough of stuff that was on the exam. The book was especially weak in the Win95 section. The Core section was good tho. If you are not strong in Windows (especially troubleshooting), you definately need another book.

AWESOME BOOK! I passed the A+ with flying colors!,

This book gave me just the material I needed to pass the exam and skipped all the fluff that is in other 1000+ page books. It is lacking somewhat in modem coverage; and the EP Process labels in the chapter on printers follow the HP model rather than the IBM version, but NYC's review below is way off. If you get this book, pick up New Rider's A+ Top Score Software to test yourself. It matches up real well with the book.

I wish I had found this book first. If you already have some knowledge, read this first to skip the stuff you don't really need from those 1000 page books. This book helped me pass both parts of the exam.

Awesome book........if you're NOT a beginner.,

If you have computer experience, this book is the one for you. It gets down to what you need to know to pass the test. Does not go in-depth so if you are a beginner, I would not recommend it. Also, there are a few topics that the book does not cover, but the exams do; modem strings for example. Still, it provides enough to pass the exam.

If you have any computer knowledge at all. READ THIS BOOK FIRST. I wish I had. I wasted time on the Microsoft Book and the Myers book was just TOO BIG. This book has enough info for you to pass the exam. Use the other books for more detail on a subject, but you wont need them. Plus I found tons of mistakes in the Microsoft book and that slowed me down. I Passed the exams because of this Book. I'm currently reading others in the series and they're great.

Excellent Quick Review Tool,

This review is from: A+ Fast Track: Core/Hardware and DOS/Windows Exams (Textbook Binding)
I found this book to be an excellent quick refresher tool. This should be used only if you already have extensive knowledge because the chapters do not delve into details. You must know each topic backwards, forwards, up and down. For example you must know all the details of the EP Process because there will be several questions about it on the test. My only complaint is that it didn't come with a CD-ROM.

Overview - Not enough detail,

This review is from: A+ Fast Track: Core/Hardware and DOS/Windows Exams (Textbook Binding)
This book provided an overview of most of the topics covered but did not go into detail on much of the information that was needed, especially Windows/DOS half. Not bad on Core. I would recommend shopping for a book on Amazon by reading the reviews before buying the lowest price one that I saw. It wasn't worth it, because the same info in the book is available on the net, and there are a lot of practice tests online.

This is a great book when I start MSCE I will be using this type of book also. The book is laid out in Core and domains needed to pass and DOS/WIN and domains needed to pass. New Riders A+ CD Rom is a great compliment to this book. Also check out the net notably aplustutor.com

Not a good book.,

This review is from: A+ Fast Track: Core/Hardware and DOS/Windows Exams (Textbook Binding)
This book is not a very good book to use to prepare for the exam, it makes good review but, but still it is lacking alot of key elements that is asked on the test. I would not recommend this book to anyone, not even an enemy.
