The author references a few times how she is not an expert. She's an adoptive mom who speaks out of her experience. There is some helpful information, but I didn't learn anything new to me. If you have a limited budget and can only afford a few books, I would probably suggest you skip over this one. If you are accumulating all the info you can get from every source, then purchase away. Very quick and easy read.

There are so many scientific books out there about trauma, older child adoption and all kinds of other "expert" literature. This is not one of them. While these are important, I loved that Fasten Your Sweet Belt was a real mom's take on actually raising older, adopted children. Pure honesty- hold the science.

It was a quick read and was one of those books that made you feel like you were just having a great conversation with a girlfriend over coffee while reading it. I appreciated, more than anything, the author's candor. And while she didn't sugar coat older child adoption, I loved that this book was not all doom and gloom. It was refreshing to hear a mother talk about the challenges of this unique parenting situation while still finding JOY and GOD'S purpose in motherhood.

I am an adoptive parent (adopted a toddler internationally). We are in the process of adopting an older child out of the foster care system. I am so glad to have had this book as an addition to our preperatory reading as we get ready to embark on this journey. I find that there are very few adoptive mothers willing to open up and be truthful about their experiences- I'm so thankful that Jodi was willing to open up and share her heart with the rest of us.

I ordered this book, among several others, as my husband and I are considering domestic adoption from foster care. This book is cute and an easy read, but the content is not extremely insightful or unique compared to others on the same subject. It also focuses almost exclusively on issues stemming from international adoption. Save your money and time for another resource.

This book is a MUST READ for anyone considering older child adoption, those who are in the process, and those who have already brought their children home. As a mother of 6, two of whom were adopted internationally at ages 16 and 7, I found this book to be full of wisdom and encouragement.

What makes this book different from the more "clinical" adoption books is that it is written by a mother who is still in the trenches. The real life examples make it easy to relate the book to what is happening in your home. Jodi's honesty about those things she wished she had done differently leaves room for me to feel like I am not the only adoptive mom who isn't perfect! I find that very encouraging.

Even though our oldest son came home over two years ago and our newest addition has been home 7 months, this book is still very applicable. I found a lot of information to help me better understand my adopted teen, in particular.

My family is in the process of adopting a 14 year old boy. I ordered this book because I wanted the real life perspective only a mother who has adopted older children has. The book arrived at 11:00 am and I finished it shortly after. I could not put it down.

I found this book very honest about the challenges we will face and am thankful Jodi was open about the things she wishes she had done differently. It has given me hope that while things will not be easy, they will be okay. I am excited more than ever for our son to come home so we can begin our life together. I am anxious to know him and have him know us. I now understand the blessings will far outweigh the hard times, even if it takes a while.

I am now rereading the book with a pen and a highlighter!

Thank you for writing this book!
