The popular mistaken concept is that we cannot gain strength and build resistance unless we eat So long as this illusion persists, thousands will go to premature graves.Food and nutrition are not synonymous. You are not nourished by food you eat, but in proportion to the amount you digest and assimilate.Through the ages men and women have fasted and regained health, peace of mind and a new way of life. Preservation of life depends on a system of right living. Fasting is only one phase of this system. When it is used properly and supervised by a qualified person, 'Fasting Can Save Your Life'

4.0 out of 5 stars Fasting Did Literally Save My Life! July 27, 2005
Format:Paperback
I read this book back in 1976, when I was very ill with lupus. Shortly afterwards, I went to Shelton's Health School, as he called it, just south of San Antonio (which is no longer in existence). I fasted for 21 days and learned how to eat right. It was life-changing. I had had severe Sjogren's syndrome (an eye disease common in lupus) before going on the fast, but it completely disappeared by the end and has never recurred. His remark that the eye diseases that disappear during a fast has to be seen to be believed is certainly true! My lupus had gone into remission, but I was still extremely tired. After arriving home, I did my best to stick to the raw fruit, vegetable, and nut diet that he recommended, while drinking nothing but water. To make a long story short, I have completely recovered from lupus but discovered that to get free of the fatigue, a juice fast was more effective. Ten days on lemon juice or tomato juice relieved the fatigue completely. Provided the fast is followed by this strict diet, the results are lasting. There is no doubt that fasting can save your life!

3.0 out of 5 stars A good book on fasting, but like so many, still flawed. December 10, 1999
By Dave R.
Format:Paperback
This is an inspirational and very informative book on fasting and is much better than most other ones out there. However, like so many books on 'alternative' health care, it uses too much anecdotal evidence, does not support its claims with outside evidence, and glosses over the details of the actual physiological changes in the body in favor of dramatic, flowery accounts of how the body undergoes 'cleansing.'

Don't get me wrong -- Shelton was a pioneer in the fasting movement, and I generally think his information is dead on, but if you prefer a book that is more current, less emotionally charged, and better documented, I would suggest Dr. Joel Fuhrmann's book, 'Fasting and Eating for Health...' or Dr. Elson Haas's 'Staying Healthy with Nutrition.'

And, contrary to what I always believed and what the reviewer above says, juice fasting is NOT a good alternative to water fasting. Juice fasting results in much more lean muscle mass being consumed since the body never fully enters ketosis. Fuhrmann does a good job explaining this, in case you're interested.

Shelton's book will always have a place in my library, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Health Improved Dramatically After Fasting 12 Days. January 1, 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
In January 1973 I read this book and applied the knowledge I found in it. I got rid of health problems I had for over 10 years. Fasting works so well, that Medical Science doesn't want you to know about it. A must read book for every human.

5.0 out of 5 stars It works November 7, 2007
By Bozo
Format:Paperback
Following the advice given in the book me and my wife were able to get rid of chronic sinusitis that plagued us for years in 1993 and it never returned because we keep following it. I now feel much more in control of my life since I now know where disease comes from and can control it, and take the "traditional" medicine for what it really is - the business focused on making money by selling you temporary "fixes" and therefore not wanting to cure you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fasting works . . . what a trip! September 18, 1997
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
In November of 96', I found myself a total wreck physically, at least in my way of thinking. I was suffering from stomach problems, diarrhea, arthritis, stiffness in leg joints, Hay Fever, and I could go on and on. I'm not sure at this point how many fine cars I helped physicians to purchase and I received no benefit from any of it. One day I picked up this book on Water Fasting, read it through and said, "Why not!" I was so amazed at the results that I now recommend fasting and a proper diet to everyone I can. I am now off of all drugs and am in the best of health. E-mail me with your questions and or comments

Format:Paperback
I fasted for 14 days drinking only water for the entire period (under supervision of a trained naturopath), and immediately lost 28 pounds in this period. maintained a life style as recommended and lost a total of 48 pounds over a period of three months. this book helped me understand what my body was going through at that time. I whole heartedly recommend it and his other books. Please also consult your naturopath before proceeding on any fasts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do It Yourself! April 30, 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is more of a do-it-yourself handbook than anything else that I've read on fasting to recovery. It is written by the energetic leader of a movement that has revolutionized attitudes toward recovery and health. Even those who have not accepted everything that he wrote, or even heard his name, have been influenced in ways that they may not realize. The author was invited by Mohandas Gandhi to teach fasting to Indians, but prevented by the intervention of the second World War. He refined health care philosophy and redacted 19th century health reform classics. His typing and dictation resulted in a continuing flow of substantial books and magazine articles throughout the middle of the century, while he managed a "health school", as he called his fasting institute, and founded a health reform-oriented membership organization. A redoubtable fighter of medical corruption and self-serving medical propaganda, he endured many legal attacks. His writing is not everyone's cup of tea, but this volume is less combative and much more universal than some others. It can be supplemented by a medical review of fasting, such as Fasting and Eating for Health, written by Joel Fuhrman, MD.
