4.0 out of 5 stars A BIG THANK YOU to Amazon's used book sales!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very misleading and misguided information on fasting
This author knows little about fasting and how to properly break fasts. The book contains much misleading and even dangerous information.

Much better books on the subject exist.

The most complete book, the one every serious faster should own, is "The Science and Fine Art of Fasting" by Dr. Herbert M. Shelton

Finally!! I had the original book by Dr Cott "Fasting as a Way of Life", and it was practical, and extremely informative about all aspects of fasting.

I would fast about once every 3 to 4 months, for anywhere from 3 to 7 days. It was wonderful! It kept my weight optimal, I felt energetic, and I was only slightly hungry on the second day of any fast, but no longer than that day. Once I regained my hunger, I always carefully broke my fast as directed, and felt great afterward.

I lost my copy of that original book many years back, and didn't feel comfortable to fast without some reference. But since the tide had turned in public opinion about fasting, and there weren't many sources of information available.

Thanks to amazon.com 's used book sales, I will get another copy, so that I can once again feel the benefits of fasting.

This book is the one that other authors reference as the authority on fasting, and anyone planning to fast should definitely read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a wonderful and responsable book on unique suject!, May 10, 2000
This review is from: Fasting-The Ultimate Diet (Paperback)
i am a orthomolecular- nutritionist, and generaly my system is not exactly in the direction of fasting, but the only rule is that there are no rules. sometimes i do recommand to my patients a few days fast,( especialy to my very severe allergic patients). eventhough i admit that i didn't ordered toany of my patients to fast more than 5 days, i am convinced that some cases can benefit from this book.the actualy 2 books combined together explains the mechanisms of fasting, and teach the reader what really happens in the body systems while you are on fasting for 3 days,a week, 2 weeks, and 3 weeks, andwhen and how to understand what and when it became a starvation, and when it is just a cleansing fast. the exact way of introducing yourself back to foods are discovered with great details, and what kinds of illness and diseases are not alowed to do the fast.this is why i said in the begining that this is a responsable book. it is very recommanded!

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick, fun and full of interesting info....., June 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Fasting-The Ultimate Diet (Paperback)
and you get two in one. There are actually two fasting books included and while they are basically saying the same things they do cover some different areas and vary only slightly in the diet you should practice as you come off the fast. If I have a complaint or minor want, it would be that the examples are not divided into categories of men and women. Men and women are going to feel very different when going on a fast as well as I would have liked categories for people who are overweight and those who are not. As it is you have to read anectdotal info to glean any info for the category for which you fit. After having said that it allowed me to try my first two day fast. When I realized that going off the fast is like a fast in its self (no solid food) I decided as a novice that I could handle two days of water and two days of diluted juice for a total of 4 days without solids. It wasn't easy but it wasn't hard either. I didn't go crazy from hunger, get cramps or any such nonsense but sometimes during the day I would get a dull ache which was uncomfortable. I would take extra water at that time and it would slowly go away. I lost 5 pounds the first 2 days which is nothing to sneeze at. I continued with my yoga and other exercises and never felt light headed or weak. In fact the one point in the book that I especially agree with is that I feel empowered and in control. It's a nice feeling to know you can do something of this nature. Now that I have tested the waters.... I am going to plan a longer fast later this summer.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most indepth book on fasting that I've ever found!, July 28, 2007

I purchased this book upon the recommendation of a reviewer of another book on fasting, and I'm so glad I did!! It contains the MOST comprehensive information on fasting that I've ever found!! Now this book on fasting is based on fasting in the TRUEST sense of the word - just drinking water!! Not too many people advocate that anymore, and I think it's a lost art. Real fasting (as opposed to a modified fast of having fruit juices) is from biblical times, and prior to biblical times too. I find it very powerful (not in a "magical" kind of way) but powerful in that you're cleansed when you fast, and your senses are keener, you're able to think clearer than you ever have, and you have time for other things - besides eating!!

Fasting is not for the faint hearted, or people who are NOT under their doctor's supervision - kinda difficult sometimes though because so many people in the medicall community view fasting as an archaic practice that is also dangerous. Sure it could be dangerous if you jump into it without making sure that you're able to do it, and if you ignore your body's warning signs should there be any.

This book has taken me beyond the fasting that I was capable of doing in the past - juice fasting, right through to water fasting. I know I will treasure this book and refer to it many, many times in the future.

Note: This edition contains 2 books on fasting, by the same author!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the first fast!, October 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Fasting-The Ultimate Diet (Paperback)
I was totally skeptical of fasting, but reading this book helped me overcome my reluctance. I now fast 2-3 times a year or whenever I feel out of control with eating. I find fasting much easier than dieting, and this book showed me the way, for which I am grateful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fasting- made interesting!, April 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Fasting-The Ultimate Diet (Paperback)
This book by far the most interesting book I have ever read. It not only explains the hows and whys of fasting but how it can become a joyous part of your life. It helped me to lose 10 pounds and keep it off. I eat whatever I want, whenever I want on the days I eat and for one or two days a week I fast, I eat noting and drink only water and is easier than you may think. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to lose weight or just to experience something new and exciting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner as well as experienced faster, November 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Fasting-The Ultimate Diet (Paperback)
This book covered everything I had been searching for in the last year on fasting. Though the cover focuses on weight loss, the book includes many other benefits. It also went into the misconceptions and resulting fears about going without food (with funny, but disturbing examples of paranoia). It can shed some serious light on the current media craze to quickly finger someone as "anorexic". It confirmed ideas in my personal experiences with fasting-including why water fasting is easier and better than juice fasting. It has a chapter with many personal accounts of the fasting experience. The print is easy to read and it's not at all wordy (boring). My longest fast was an 11-day juice fast. I am starting again, with much more information to make this a way of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! Just what I've been waiting for., May 16, 1999
This review is from: Fasting-The Ultimate Diet (Paperback)
Wow! I'm so excited to finally find the book that will make a huge difference in my life. I did a one week lemonade, master cleanser fast about a year ago with very good results. Unfortunately, I've only read an exerpt of that book pertaining to just the fast itself, so I can't compare the two books. Seemed I was hungry on the lemonade diet and I guess it was due to the calorie consumption. I'm on my second day of the ultimate fast and sailing through. As the book says, when we don't eat food, we don't have hunger pains. Amazing! I've lost three pounds so far and will continue for a total of only three days. My weight is pretty much on target now. My husband accuses my of anorexia/bolemia. I'm not, I just want my body to function as efficiently as possible and I want to feel both physically and mentally at my best. The book covers this well. This fast is the answer. I will continue to fast about one day a week for the rest of my life. The book convinced my of the safety of the fast. I needed that badly. I'm a nurse who has always been nutritionally oriented.

This work is a classic; its a pity it remains out of print. It is a concise overview of fasting, written by an MD, and, in my opinion, should be read by anyone who is thinking about fasting. It is also a great motivator.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, July 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Fasting-The Ultimate Diet (Paperback)
This is a great book for anyone who's thinking of fasting for the first time. It's full of stories and encouragment, as well as lots of important info. I bought 2 copies so that I could hoard one away in case I misplace one! One of the best things in this particular book is the post-fast diet-the most reasonable one I've seen yet. It doesn't have you buying a ton of exotic vegetables and fruits, it breaks the fast over a long period (a day for each day you fasted) by eating yogurt, salads, fruits-normal things you can find anywhere. Perhaps I like that because it's the way I eat normally anyway. Overall it's a comforting book that makes you feel ok to give fasting a try. Lots of helpful tips not to be missed.
