Biography

Joe Jonas has discovered his new voice. His debut as a solo artist is as infectious as it is heartbreaking, danceable as it is soulful and comes at you with a sound that is not what anyone expected. After six years writing and recording with his brothers Nick and Kevin, Jonas says that working on an album on his own was “liberating…in a way, but also a challenge, to finally be ... Editorial Reviews

Highly anticipated 2011 solo album from multi-platinum recording artist Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers. Album features production by Danja (Timbaland prodigy),Rob Knox (T.I., Chris Brown, Britney Spears) and Brian Kennedy (Rihanna, Ciara, Jennifer Hudson). Lead single "See No More" was co-written by Joe Jonas and Chris Brown and produced by Brian Kennedy (Rihana "Disturbia").

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the better albums of 2011 November 10, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I went into this blindly, not really being familiar with the Jonas Brothers, other than the fact that such a group existed. Rather, I took a chance based on interviews I read with Joe in which he described his new sound and the direction he wanted to take his music. His words caught my attention, and I must say, it's actually a pretty solid effort, to the point where I might say "Fastlife" is one of the better albums released this past year. (Though you'd never know it, based on its relatively poor chart performance, but oh well.)

More than once I've heard this CD compared to something Justin Timberlake might do, but to my ears Joe comes off as more of an Adam Lambert in training, especially vocally. There is the slightest underlying R&B vibe, true, but overall the record maintains a mainstream pop sound sprinkled with electro beats. It's not so harsh as to alienate or put off a segment of listeners, but it's enough to hold your interest and keep it fun and current. I'd say 80% of the disc is uptempo, with a handful of those songs venturing into club/dance territory, and a couple ballads mixed in for some good variety. Not a dud in the bunch, I assure you. As far as whether or not he really is "all grown up," well, this isn't exactly the most profound music you'll ever hear, but it does seem to have a bit more thought and substance than most other Top 40 these days. Plus he wrote or co-wrote most it himself, which is impressive.

Highlights for me include the trance-like "Love Slayer" and the futuristic "Kleptomaniac," but there's very likely something for everyone. And I realize there's a certain stigma - maybe a sense of embarrassment - in admitting you're listening to a Jonas Brother gone solo, but I think in this case the music pretty much speaks for itself, so don't feel too bad, lol. As for the parental warning sticker, Lil' Wayne drops one F-Bomb during the (unnecessary) "Just in Love" bonus track, but that's it. Honestly if you weren't looking for it you'd probably never notice it, but I know some people take that sort of thing into account, so there it is. Overall this album is highly recommended for fans of classic pop or light techno, but like I said at first, I can't compare it to anything he's done before. In and of itself it's very well done, and that's good enough for me.

Upon first listen to Fastlife all I could think of was - "This sounds like Justin Timberlake's first CD." Oh how wrong was I! Yes, there are similarities, as there will be for pop music of this caliber, but this is one of those albums that grow on you gradually, track by track.

It really is refreshing to hear a more mature voice for the young Joe Jonas, but it's also great to hear him singing more "grown up" material than that bubble gum warehouse music he was forced to sing with his brothers. I think Mr. Jonas took the proper steps to move away from those types of tunes.

The title track is easily one of my favorite songs. Original beats and fine arrangements meant to be both sophisticated and fun at the same time.

Other standouts in my opinion are Just In Love, Love Slayer (which is begging for a house remix), Sorry is a very pleasant ballad. Take It and Run is near the end of the album and may be overlooked for those who only listen to the first few songs, but it is worth listening to and will bump in a club if given a chance.

All in all, I am glad that I didn't sleep on this release and gave it a chance. I would have missed out on some great tunes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Joe > Jonas Brothers? December 8, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I got a chance to see Joe perform tracks from his "Fastlife" album in NYC before the album was released. I love that he has so many upbeat/dance tracks, which are the type of songs that Top 40 radio has been playing for some time now. My favorite tracks are "Love Slayer" and "Sorry." Let's hope he keeps releasing singles from this album and turning out hot videos like "Just In Love."
