Easy Livin' But Not Easy Listenin',

This review is from: Fastway (Audio CD)
Among the many great hard rock albums that came out in 1983 such as Def Leppard's "Pyromania", Quiet Riot's "Metal Health" and Iron Maiden's "Piece Of Mind" , this album was by far my favotite. Even though this album sold only a fraction to these great albums, musically it can stand up to any of these aformentioned works. While yes its is Zeppelin-infulenced, lead guitarist "Fast Eddie" Clarke brings the hard and fast elements from his former band Motorhead into the mix. Drummer Jerry Shirley bashes the skins harder than he did in Humble Pie. But to me the star of this band is lead vocalist Dave King. I consider him to be the most underrated metal vocalist of all time. His powerful vocals simply just burn, with just the right touch of bluesiness added. I love this album just as much today as I did when it first came out when I was 16. It simply just rocks. Highlights are "Feel Me Touch Me..." "Heft" "You Got Me Runnin'" "We Became One" and the minor AOR and MTV hit "Say What You Will". Seriously check this CD out !

Most overlooked album in Metal history?,

Coming at the tail-end of the NWOBHM Fastway combined all the elements that made that movement successful and came up with an absolutely timeless classic slab of bluesy HM. David King shows off his incredible range and feel while Eddie displays a heretofore unseen side:a sense of musical balance. It will always be a mystery to me why this first album was their musical zenith. The rumors of the day had it that in early 1982 Pete Way (UFO), Fast Eddie (Motorhead), and Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) would get together and form a British Metal supergroup. This seems quite likely seeing as how Lizzy and Motorhead were under the same management. As this was during Phil's lowest point with his adddictions and Eddie was fighting addiction battles of his own it's probably better for Eddie that this never happened. Better for us as well because we were allowed the pleasure of introduction to David King.

Another Great Overlooked Band,

Song for song, one of the best debut albums of all time. Straightforward kickass rock with a blues edge. David King's vocals soar througout and the drive never lets up. The follow up, All Fired Up picks up right where Fastway leaves off, with another great collection of bluesy rock riffs and great vocals. Was lucky enough to catch them opening for Iron Maiden back in '83. Hope one day a DVD materializes but for now will settle for these two collections and the Trick or Treat soundtrack...King's Flogging Molly has put out some great stuff, but of a far different nature.

I bought this when it first came out on vinyl. What a record! Great guitar, great bass, great vocals, great songs. Their second LP was almost as good, but got no airplay. Somehow, these guys disappeared from rock radio. This CD is one my all-time favorites. If you like hard rock, buy this CD! It'll become one of your favorites.

Great Rock!,

When this album first came out got the cassette and wore it out in my 73' Nova. Great rock songs from beginning to end. Fast Eddie Clark (of Motorhead) played excellent and the vocals remind me of Robert Plant. This band was supposed to be a colaboration between Fast Eddie and Pete Way of UFO, but Pete did Waysted so Fastway came out anyway. No loss, this is one of the best hard rock albums of the early 80's. I wish the record company would rerelease "All Fired Up" on its own.

I am telling you - this is a superb hard rock / pop metal album. I have it on vinyl and am going to buy the CD soon. David King is outstanding on the microphone for this group. Great guitar by Eddie Clarke (I mean, really great guitar, too). Strong rockers, a little blues sound and a great pace! They were hot. They first hit on MTV with Say What You Will (try to air guitar that riff!) and then really faded from sight - but the rest of the album is great: Another Day, We Become One, Feel Me, Touch Me, You Got Me Running and Easy Livin'. Try this one and you won't be disappointed. Definitely their best release.

Originally unleashed to the unexpected metal world in 1983,this was the English heavy rocker's first album.Fastway was like one of my all time favorites of the '80's.Never did get their just due.Fastway was made up of two metal/hard rock veterans,Motorhead's guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke and Humble Pie's drummer Jerry Shirley along with bassist Pete Way and under rated vocalist Dave King.Every track on this reissue rules, but the certain ones I could never get tired of were the scorching opener "Easy Livin'","All I Need Is Your Love","We Become One"(used to love seeing the video on old school MTV),"Say What You Will" and "You Got Me Running".An absolute must-have for all '80's metal fans.Better, yet an import label BGO Records has reissued this debut CD as a two-lp's-on-one-disc pressing along with their second record 'All Fired Up'.Talk about your worthy releases.

Exactly the WAY hard rock should be played,

Former Motorhead guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke and ex-UFO's bassist Pete Way decided to put together a band that would play a very hard, straight-ahead kind of rock. The outcome couldn't have been better. The pair stroke gold in finding a young, totally unknown Irish vocalist named David King and also with steady drummer Jerry Shirley, formerly of Humble Pie, to complete the bill. The sound is a heavy, raw Led Zeppelin brand of rock, very much so due to King's highly reminiscent vocals to that of Robert Plant, but also because of the ferocity of the guitar riffs, thunderous bass and flaming drums. This eponymous album does not credit bass maestro Pete Way because at the time of its release he had jumped to Ozzy's train instead (much for Eddie's disdain)... although that stint with the Ozz lasted almost nothing. Nevertheless, on a radio interview back in 1983, I listened to "Fast" Eddie himself say that PETE WAY, IN FACT, HAD RECORDED THOSE AWESOME BASS LINES. I still can't understand why this album never got the huge recognition it deserved, but Fastway's debut (and follow-up) are an absolute MUST for any hard rock music lover, or any rock fan altogehter. Buy this classic now!

Fastway is ex Motorhead guitarist Eddie Clarke's band, and he was obviously sick and tired of Motorhead's approach since this one is far more polished and radio friendly. The album is good indeed with outstanding songs like the catchy "Easy living" (not Uriah Heep cover), "Feel me, touch me", and "Another day" (the album's hardest rocking track) among others. There's also some good, although not great, solid rock tunes included and you won't find any fillers. Singer Dave King has a good voice but his "high pitch" can be a bit annoying in the long run. If I didn't already have this one, I'd get it today. The album is worth either very strong 3 stars, or weaker 4 stars...Anyway, Fastway managed to release another good album with "Waiting for the roar" in 1986. But after that they totally lost it. Please don't buy "On target" - you'll be so disappointed, I was...

originally formed by FAST eddie clarke ex-Motorhead guitarist and pete WAY U.F.O. bass player.Pete Way left the band before the recording of the album, leaving Clarke with HUMBLE PIE ex drummer-Jerry Shirley, and the amazing Dave King on vocals, a young singer who obviously fell in a Zep barrel when he was young. The result is a truely great piece of HARD ROCK, no zep-clone no Motorhead clone...something in between but definitly highly interesting! What we've got here is the experience of the musicians and the energy of a debut album from a bunch of young rebels! Fast Eddie shows he is a brilliant Hard/Blues guitarist and composer highly inspired on this specific album.A bombastic drum job with a very heavy and modern sound-and I don't mean modern for the 80's, it still sound great 20 years later!Jerry Shirley's performance is one his best along the ROCKIN THE FILLMORE Humble Pie's Live album. More Zep and Bluesy than Motorhead, this album remains one of the greatest release from the 80's, the kind of album that doesn't go out of style or class. This first FASTWAY album has nothing to do with the next albums Fastway or Eddie Clarke will release in the 80's or 90's.A classic Hard/Blues album! |
