Really, really enjoyed this book,
By Armchair Interviews (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fat, Broke & Lonely No More: Your Personal Solution to Overeating, Overspending, and Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places (Hardcover)
If one mark of a good writer is that they connect with their readers, then Victoria Moran is a very good writer. Fat, Broke and Lonely No More is written in a style that feels more like an intimate conversation with a close friend--a friend that we don't see often enough. Insightful, compassionate and unaffected, Moran has fashioned a book most women can benefit from reading.
Having been at one point or another either fat, broke or lonely or some unfortunate combination of the three, I feel qualified, maybe even certified, to comment on her observations. However, the most eloquent comment I can make is a quote from the author herself. "At its root, fat, broke and lonely, whether as fact or fear, arises from emptiness inside a human being, a cavity in the soul." This book is about looking to ourselves for the answers. The section I found most interesting, is the one I almost didn't read. Having been well married for thirty-nine years to a man I still find irresistible, I didn't think that her insights on lonely would be of much value for me. They are! Victoria Moran effectively points out to be with a whole person, you need to be a whole person, driving home the point again that self-discovery is the key to weight, money, relationships and life. This section is a primer unto itself on how to conduct all the relationships of your life--whether friend, neighbor, lover or business acquaintance. I'm sure if you put into play this chapter's suggestions, you would have a remarkable life. It's worth a shot. The comprehensive bibliography is reason enough to buy this book--whatever you're looking for, you'll find it here. Now after saying how much I enjoyed the book's content, I need to say this. The cover art had me confused. Written in a light-hearted tone, this IS a serious book, and the cover looks like a comic book about Betty and Veronica in the '50s. Armchair Interviews says: Everyone can learn something from this book.

Victoria Moran has a way of writing that speaks to each individual personally in a non-judgmental way. I have already implemented her mantra to "just wait" after dinner when those nightime cravings set in. She said that I would be okay, and she was right. I didn't starve and I was okay. Thanks, Victoria. Keep blessing us with your great writing and wonderful spirit. On the negative side, my 10 year old daughter was embarrassed by the book jacket. She made me take it off while reading poolside on our vacation. She did not want anybody to think I was "fat, broke or lonely".

Victoria has done it again!,

This review is from: Fat, Broke & Lonely No More: Your Personal Solution to Overeating, Overspending, and Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places (Hardcover)
Victoria Moran has done it again with this book - fantastic, wise and funny advice that actually works and is very doable. Anyone who has trouble with her bank account, love affairs, or food relationship MUST read this book and keep it by her bedside. I have been a fan of Victoria's since I read her Love Powered Diet, which I am happy to learn is being reissued. It too is a compassionate, well written book. Victoria is an amazing writer. Many self help books are written in the same way, with the same tone - but Victoria is a wordsmith so everything she puts on paper is fun to read. Thank you!

This book presupposes that the reader believes in god. Which is not to say that it is necessarily a bad or inherently unhelpful book, but I personally knew the moment I saw the words "we all have a god-shaped hole in us" that it would be of no help to ME. In fact, I couldn't even keep on reading. The author does state that you can substitute the word "god" for any concept that's meaningful to you, but I personally am an atheist. Advice like "surrender yourself to a higher power" is meaningless to someone who doesn't believe in it.
I would certainly not have bought the book had I known this beforehand, and that is the reason I am posting this review.

Chasing Perfect,
By Wefun5 "Kari" (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fat, Broke & Lonely No More: Your Personal Solution to Overeating, Overspending, and Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places (Hardcover)
I'm not sure how Ms. Moran got inside my head, but she's clearly there! This book points out all the potholes that keep knocking my life off its path. No matter what I do, I really do still feel Fat, Broke and Lonely--and I'm 40 pounds lighter than I used to be, I can finally afford to buy the things I really want to buy and not just from Goodwill, and I have a great husband, lovely friends and the best kids ever. No reason to be miserable! So, why is it I keep chasing "perfect"? That's where this book comes in to show us how to make life simply lovely--for real. If you're like me; a regular harried woman in the 21st Century, thinking that there has to be a better way, this book will speak to you, too.

Great book,
By Beth "Mom of 2" (North Carolina, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fat, Broke & Lonely No More: Your Personal Solution to Overeating, Overspending, and Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places (Hardcover)
This is one book that you absolutely cannot judge by the cover. All the while I was reading it I was thinking "I know men who need to read this too." I am pleased to see that another reviewer is a male who read it and enjoyed it. I recommend it to men and women. Even if you just have one of the three issues...get it. I am happily married and I didn't feel the "lonely" part really applied to me except that I have definitely struggled socially thanks to my "fat" and ""broke" insecurities so I read that section anyway and benefited because I did. I was nodding my head a lot and had many "Aha" moments throughout the whole book. It is straightforward, organized well and easy-to-read. I feel motivated from this book and will definitely put her ideas in to practice. This is the first Victoria Moran book that I've read, but I will now get others. I appreciate her writing style and found her to be encouraging without being preachy. It was just good stuff. Like a wise friend giving some honest advice.

Good Writing but Nothing New,
This review is from: Fat, Broke & Lonely No More: Your Personal Solution to Overeating, Overspending, and Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places (Hardcover)
Victoria Moran certainly has a way with her writing style, injecting humor and an understanding of her subject matter into the book. However, there wasn't much 'new' information in her book.
I did like how she presented the information in her book so it was a good read, but as far as picking up any new insights, well, there really weren't any.

Great Book For Men As Well As Women,
By
This review is from: Fat, Broke & Lonely No More: Your Personal Solution to Overeating, Overspending, and Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places (Hardcover)
As a man, I found the principles in this book, like those found in other books by Victoria Moran, to be truly universal. She understands that all of life's problems, and specifically those related to weight, finances, and relationships, have spiritual causes and spiritual solutions. She draws on the world's great religious teachers as well as her own knowledge and experiences to offer practical, workable advice to the toughest personal issues. Her willingness to become vulnerable and share her own struggles gives this book rare authenticity. If men can look past the woman on the cover and the pink design, they will benefit from this book as much as women, and will help to make it a classic in the literature on human potential and development.

Her Best Work Yet,
By ILuvHorses (West Coast, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fat, Broke & Lonely No More: Your Personal Solution to Overeating, Overspending, and Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places (Hardcover)
I have all of Ms. Moran's books. Over the years I've donated books, given them away to friends, etc. but I have all of her books because they have such a special energy to them and such wisdom written within the pages that I can't bear to part with them. So, it was with great eagerness that I awaited this new book and although I knew it would not disappoint, WOW is all I can say. The book is worth its cost just for the section on BROKE. I suddenly feel at peace with my financial situation and am now regularly saving, donating 5% of my salary (that's what is appropriate for me right now) and paying down my debt all the while giving myself permission to have a good life (instead of waiting for "later"). The only tiny disappointment I have with this book is the unfortunate cover which I think may turn people off thinking it's a silly book. All her other books had great covers so not sure what happened. Don't let the cover deter you though, this book is a god-send.

Life as Art,
By
This review is from: Fat, Broke & Lonely No More: Your Personal Solution to Overeating, Overspending, and Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places (Hardcover)
Get ready to make a positive change in your life when you read this practical book. I was moved by Victoria's witty observations of life and her findings about what makes us fat, broke and lonely. No, it's not the food we eat, although that is important for good health. It's not willpower, although you can use what little you have of that commodity to make small changes each day. It's not having tons of money, although money can be used to appreciate who you are right now. It's the attitude we have about our life and our body that either makes or breaks us. Comparing ourselves to others and trying to measure up usually serves to make us aware that we are inferior or short of our ideal; and that only makes us feel worse.
There is a way to break the cycle with the trio of fat, broke & lonely and embrace a new outlook on life that brings you joy and fulfillment in every area. Moran tells us exactly how to do it and she is the expert. She's been there, done that, and got the tee shirt (or book in this case) to prove it. This book is not your run-of-the-mill self-help book. This book is your friend helping you discover that YOU are your OWN best friend. This book can make a difference in the way you look and feel about yourself! In it, you will discover why it's important to treat every moment of your life as if it were art. You will also learn how to see the whole canvas.
