Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

As anyone who has struggled with weight loss knows intimately, hundreds of fad diet books come and go, offering fat-burning regimens featuring everything from grapefruit to cabbage soup. In comparison, this autobiographical account of one man’s battle with obesity and the dieting tips and tricks he learned along the way offers a refreshing dose of common sense. Baroni emphasizes from the outset that he’s neither a doctor, personal trainer, nor supplement huckster but simply a regular guy whose health advice comes from hard-knocks personal experience. At 20, Baroni’s 6’2” frame was packing over 320 pounds when he first suffered severe, indigestion-related chest pains. This wake-up call prompted him to join Duke University’s renowned Diet & Fitness Center, which offers an immersion program in health-promoting lifestyle changes that inform the better part of Baroni’s advice. The volume’s greatest strength, however, is Baroni himself and his inspiring example, doling out warmth and guidance as a trusted friend might to anyone grappling with the challenges of maintaining a healthy waistline. --Carl Hays

Review

"Bill Baroni learned that the best reason to lose weight, get fit, and stay healthy is to enjoy life even more. He created a physical, emotional, and spiritual metamorphosis for himself. This book gives a clear and readable description of the steps he took. I truly enjoyed reading it, and consider it a must for those who suffer because of their weight, and want to change."

-- Dr. Michael Hamilton, former director, Duke University Diet & Fitness Center; Professor Emeritus, Duke University Medical Center; author of The Duke University Medical Center Book of Diet and Fitness

I'm truly grateful Baroni wrote this, and I hope eventually to reflect that with "less" of me to love!

His book is fashioned around one simple, central idea that anyone can embrace: Diet Thinking vs. Lifestyle Thinking.

I read this book in one sitting, it was interesting, informative and easy to read. This book is a good read for people of all weights. It is part memoir and part advice. It is a story about a guy that was fat and how he took control of his weight. He doesn't push products or any specific diet, which this author does not believe in. It is just a good story that highlights many easy ways to be in charge of what you put into your body. I highly recommend this book not just for those looking to lose weight but for people that want to stay fit.

Bill Baroni was 22-years-old and just starting his political career when he suffered crushing chest pains he thought would kill him in the men's room of a posh restaurant. Through his pain, he glanced in the mirror and saw something he didn't recognize -- "a bright pink soccer ball" looking back at him.

"I'm fat, and I'm dying because I'm so heavy," he thought in despair. At the time, he weighed more than 300 pounds. Bill had been "the fat kid" all his life, but he never knew what to do about it.

That wake-up call started Bill on his way to a weight loss of over 130 pounds that he has maintained to this day, more than 15 years later. He made small changes (water instead of soda) as well as huge changes -- no more fast food! He joined the Y and started going every day. I made similar choices when I lost weight and wrote about it in How We Did It: Weight Loss Choices that Will Work for YOU.

Bill is a passionate crusader for healthy living, and he speaks about it often here in his home state of New Jersey. His book is fashioned around one simple, central idea that anyone can embrace: Diet Thinking vs. Lifestyle Thinking. Bill doesn't want you to go on a diet -- he wants you to live a healthy, fulfilling life of joy. And in his book, he shows you how you can do just that.

I once talked with Bill about his incredible achievement and he told me a story that isn't in this book -- a story of a young boy, the fat kid, the only child not invited to a classmate's birthday party, crying in the arms of a compassionate teacher. Millions of us are that fat kid, and Bill Baroni wants to help. His book is a great way to kick-start the new you. Pick it up and let him guide you on this thrilling journey.

Loved the book and Bill's writing style. He got the lifestyle change message accross in a way that made me feel good. Bill's simple approach to doing the math - eat less calories add more exercise is something we all have heard but for some reason his no nonsense way really hit home. It was good to learn about his background, how he felt growing up and how he viewed food. I especially enjoyed the Twinkie's - we all have cheated like this from time to time, thinking if no one saw us, it doesn't count. Thank you Bill, your book gave me a lot of inspiration to get fit and healthy.
