5.0 out of 5 stars Not the latest fad diet - this stuff really works!
I have been overweight my entire adult life (I just turned 50); I suppose I'm Dr. Galland's poster child for "the weight goes on and never comes off, no matter what you do." I have steadfastly refused to "go on a diet" - I don't want some temporary program that I do for a while and quit, I need a way to change my lifestyle, and this book is showing me the way to do...

My biggest complaint about this book is that if you don't want to follow Dr. Galland's menus for each stage, you won't know what to add to the next stage without going through his meal plans and figuring out what is different. 5.0 out of 5 stars Not the latest fad diet - this stuff really works!, February 17, 2006
I have been overweight my entire adult life (I just turned 50); I suppose I'm Dr. Galland's poster child for "the weight goes on and never comes off, no matter what you do." I have steadfastly refused to "go on a diet" - I don't want some temporary program that I do for a while and quit, I need a way to change my lifestyle, and this book is showing me the way to do exactly that. I lost 30 lbs. in the first month alone (and 45 in two months); I'm looking for a total loss of over 100 lbs., and for the first time in my life, I actually have hope that it will happen.

Without getting too deep into technical detail, the diet amounts to a kind of biochemical healing from the effects of years of bad eating habits. I have more energy, my general mood is better, even my fingernails are healthier. My doctor is getting ready to take me off blood-pressure and cholesterol medications.

The beauty of it is that I'm not walking around hungry all the time. In fact, I had to ask my wife to make some of the salads a little smaller because they left me feeling stuffed. The recipes are, for the most part, delicious, and we're already finding some creative ways to adapt the principles in ways we prefer.

The three-stage approach is helpful - a brief, fairly radical Stage 1 to "flush out the system" and retrain the taste buds, as well as get some quick early results to boost morale. Stage 2 is geared to more moderate, sustainable weight loss (adding in more grains and more variety than Stage 1), and Stage 3 is for long-term lifestyle maintenance. We were so encouraged that we did Stage 1 twice through before moving into Stage 2.

The thing I like best is that this shows me a way that I can live the rest of my life - true principles that really work, that I can simply live by and not worry about.

-----

A brief postscript (October 2006) - I have now been eating this way for eight+ months, and I am down 90 lb. from when I began. I am off all my blood-pressure and cholesterol medications; my BP is 110/60 (was 140/90), my cholesterol is 150 (was 230), my rest pulse is 54 (was 78). This stuff really works!

I should add to what I said above, by way of full disclosure, that the fridge-fuls of fresh produce we are now buying are considerably more expensive than the processed junk-food we were buying before, and food preparation is taking up quite a bit more of our time. But I would state unequivocally that those costs are easily worth the benefits of health and energy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The recipes are satisfying and the diet works, December 27, 2005
This diet makes so much sense and the recipes are great. I decided to start it right away. The recipes are delicious, I didn't feel hungry and I actually lost 5 pounds in the first few days. The food is the best part of this diet. It's so easy to prepare and has such great flavor, I don't feel deprived. It's like following a cook book of great meals from different parts of the world, not like dieting. Like Rachel Ray but designed by a doctor. My favorites so far: chicken parmigiano, green-tea crusted salmon, black forest banana split, tuscan frittata. I'm actually looking forward to seeing what I get to eat next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Science aside, this book just makes sense, March 15, 2006

I've done all the different fad diets that are floating around. The Zone, Protein Power, South Beach, Body for Life... All are either too carb restrictive or too time intensive (BFL). It seems like I've kept looking for that secret diet that is easy and quick. This book gets to the heart of what we all know to be true: Eat lots of veggies, Eat lean meats - specifically fish and some chx, don't over eat, don't eat after dinner, get your exercise. Hasn't your mom been telling you the same stuff forever? Yet we keep ignoring it and keep wanting bread instead of brocolli. This book explains WHY the veggies and fish help you lose the weight, but the most helpful thing for me was the menus. On all the other diets, at some point or another I stand in the kitchen with nothing to eat that's on the diet, and turn to the frozen chimichanga. This book has shopping lists, menus, recipes... it couldn't be easier. I've been on it for two weeks. I've lost nearly a pound a day. I've never been hungry. I feel healthy, less tired. It's a snap. Forget about the Leptin mumbojumbo... this is just plain healthy eating -- hopefully for life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, well-balanced and covers all the bases., January 14, 2006

I have been looking for a popular diet book to recommend to my clients and friends. The Fat Resistance Diet contains the best weight loss program that I have yet seen. I carefully analyzed the meal plans and recipes in each stage. It is high in omega-3 fats, vitamins, calcium and other minerals, and fiber. It makes certain that you get 9 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The fruits and vegetables emphasized are those with proven benefits in preventing chronic disease. There is enough protein to help control your appetite and prevent the loss of muscle that occurs with dieting. There is enough carbohydrate to help maintain energy. There are no artificial sweeteners or additives. The herbs and spices used to flavor foods all have demonstrated preventive health benefits. The recipes are simple enough that food preparation is easy and the cost is moderate. The meals I have prepared from this diet have been really tasty and satisfying.

An added benefit of this book is the sensible approach that the author takes to exercise and stress management. Most diet books don't even discuss these areas, although they are very important for weight control. Galland emphasizes walking and other forms of aerobic exercise and stretching and toning to prevent injuries.
This is an exceptionally well-balanced weight loss program.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best!, January 15, 2006
By
I raised my children on Dr. Galland's first book, Superimmunity for Kids. His advice cured them of asthma, eczema and hyperactivity. So, I've been waiting for him to write a book on nutrition for us adults. The Fat Resistance Diet is the answer. He has taken the themes that made Superimmunity so compelling and brought them to a higher level, based on all the research of the past ten years. In fact, everything that he said 20 years ago, which was considered pretty advanced and controversial at the time, has become mainstream, like the importance of omega-3 fats and the antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables. This is not just a diet for weight loss. It's a diet that helps the immune system and prevents disease.

One of the best parts of this new book is that it deals with environmental issues in addition to nutrition. My own asthma had improved a lot when I followed the same kind of diet I put my kids on after reading Superimmunity for Kids. In The Fat Resistance Diet, he explains the relationship between allergies, diet and environmental toxins in a way that really helped me understand why I once had problems with my weight and with asthma and why my kids were sick.

Another great part of this book is the food. The recipes in here are not only healthy, they are delicious and lots of them are kid-friendly, so they form the basis for terrific family meals.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Diet Works!, February 21, 2006
I have been very pleased with my purchase of The Fat Resistance Diet!

Prior to starting this diet, I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes & taking 500mg of Glucophage 3 x daily. After just 2 weeks on the Fat Resistance Diet, I lost 13 pounds and my blood sugar had dropped to a normal level ~ and after 7 weeks on the diet have discontinued my medication all together (as well as losing 21 pounds). My suger remains within a normal level daily now.

I found the diet easy to follow, once I made the initial adjustment to cutting down my daily intake of sugars & carbohydrates considerably.

I found the book very informative, without being boring. The menus are easy & practical.
I have to say that this book has been a blessing for me as a tool for getting my blood sugar under control.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cutting-edge science explained in way that makes sense, January 17, 2006
As someone who has done a lot of reading up on diet theories and weight-loss plans--and as someone who has reviewed such books for magazines--I was happy to see that Galland actually backs up his advice with research. I was also impressed with the clear explanations, particularly because the topic of leptin resistance is a novel and complicated one.

I am also aware of Dr. Galland's reputation as a physician and can say that he doesn't jump on a health or diet bandwagon simply because it's popular or trendy. He writes about what he believes in and he believes in it because he's done the research and he's seen it work in his practice. There's a wealth of knowledge in this book, not just for weight loss but overall health.

I have lost the same 2-4 pounds endlessly (and any woman I know nodds her head here) I chose this book arbitrarily and told my husband - they're all the same, I just need one which gives me a clear eating/cooking plan and this is the current favorite. Except, except they're not all the same, becuause I am up to 8 pounds lost and it's working far better than all the hundreds of other books/schemes I've tried. I've done south beach and weight watchers and jenny craig and even had fancy food delivered to my door. And this is better. It's harsh - in that it cuts out a huge amount of food - basically all refined sugar and most grains - but it's effective and I eat what it tells me too and like the book promised, the weight is starting to slowly melt off. For the first time in a long time, I feel hopeful.

I started this diet 3 weeks ago to prepare for my son's wedding. I have already lost 14 pounds without even feeling as if I was dieting. There is so much variety and the food is fantastic. My waist and my face look much thinner, my skin feels great,it's less dry and my friends tell me I look radiant. I really like the basic concept in this book of focusing on the wonderful super foods that you should eat. It's a very positive message that makes it easy to do.

This review is from: The Fat Resistance Diet: Unlock the Secret of the Hormone Leptin to: Eliminate Cravings, Supercharge Your Metabolism, Fight Inflammation, Lose Weight & Reprogram Your Body to Stay Thin- (Paperback)
..exercise, avoid trans fats and processed foods. Not much here that we haven't already been told a thousand times. My biggest complaint about this book is that if you don't want to follow Dr. Galland's menus for each stage, you won't know what to add to the next stage without going through his meal plans and figuring out what is different. Lists of what to eat and what not to eat on each stage would have made the plan much easier to follow. There is a bit more information for the first stage including the helpful eating out ideas sheet, but otherwise I felt very lost.

The best thing I can say about The Fat Resistance Diet is that the recipes are very, very good. Easy to prepare as well.
