Bad Manners released this CD with little fanfare or promotion. I bought it as soon as it was released, and while I can understand a band "improving" its sound and song composition, this album leaves you feeling like you've been had. It's not that the songs are all bad, though the album would have benefited from some songs being better recorded, and others just left out.
None of the songs are original, they are all covers of old hits the "band" enjoys listening to. Sounds more like either a contract fulfillment issue (look up "Led Zeppelin - Coda"), or Mr. Bloodvessel was testing out the new band and the market waters before bothering to compose any.... I'd certainly hate to think this was meant as a throwaway record, or the songwriters for this band and Mr. B could not agree on the money part and this is why the album was recorded under questionable circumstances.... The music is practically all cheesy 80's synthesizers: Sounds more like a Human League record than a Ska record. But then again who knows? Still, it's not a bad piece, though not their best, and clearly not to the level of "Return Of The Ugly", which is much closer to the band's original sound.- at least it had musicians in it. This CD was recorded in Germany and there is very little data in the thin booklet. Just some more disturbing photos of Buster Bloodvessel, which makes you wonder just how much weight can the human body take before its internal organs implode and rot from within. -

This is a great Bad Manners album that has only gained favor with me as time has passed. Long before Sheryl Crow covered "The First Cut is the Deepest" and before Lou Bega (remember him? Oh, nevermind) re-popularized "Mambo #5", Bad Manners was putting their zany twist on these songs. Another great cover on this disc is of The Kinks classic "Lola." I personally think that Bad Manners version is more lively, melodic, and humerous than the original. Simply envisioning Buster Bloodvessel falling for a dude is rather humerous...or maybe it's just plain sick. Bad Manners' favorites, such as "Feel Like Jumping" and "Skinhead Love Affair" are also included here.
The last three tracks can spared as I have never been keen on their dub mixes. All-in-all this is a great Bad Manners album that was well recorded, witty, and full of fun! |
