Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Brand-new Silicon City is the locale of the sequel to McNamara's praised debut, The First Directive. Chief Robinson sets up the police department with the help of narrator Officer Fraleigh, "The Block" Schuster and Paul English, the chief's men in the earlier story, Mayor Richardson of the wealthy California enclave lures Robinson into an affair with a notorious singer, which leaves Fraleigh and his partners on their own, fighting hired killers and tracing the roots of a vile conspiracy. The plot contains enough shootouts, stabbings and sexually deviant escapades, assiduously described by Fraleigh, for two thrillers. Diluting the Ossa-on-Pelion pileup, erudite English and his rough pal The Block indulge in comic bantering, welcome relief. McNamara is Chief of Police in San Jose, Calif. 2.0 out of 5 stars Unoriginal Police/Detective Thriller, April 13, 2002
This review is from: Fatal Command (Mass Market Paperback)
My problem with this story (of experienced police officers setting up a new police department)was that the characters and the plot were hard to believe. Loner hero, two sidekicks...one is smooth-talking ladies man, the other a hulking brute..Of course the mayor is involved in chicanery. A nice guy cop goes undercover in the mayor's business and you know as soon as you hear that, that the nice guy will get "offed" and he does. This author has been a cop and he has a PhD...what he does NOT have is an imagination...

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointment, March 5, 2000

This Joseph D. McNamara might have a Ph.D. but he can't write or tell a story worth a read. I expected good things from this former harlem beat cop and police chief but got nothing. I hope to god policemen aren't as ignorant as he portrays them
