Book Description

Critical acclaim for Fatal Exchange: "Gritty." "Edgy." "Shocking." "Intense." "A classic." "Sadistically good."

Tess Gideon, a female Manhattan bike messenger with an appetite for the wild side, becomes embroiled in a rogue nation's Byzantine scheme to destabilize the U.S. financial system.

From the sweltering streets of Seoul to the sex-and-drug-driven underbelly of Greenwich Village, attempts at silencing a leak in an international counterfeiting operation leave a trail of butchery that leads inevitably to Wall Street, pitting a counter-culture heroine against a ruthless state-sponsored assassination team that will stop at nothing to achieve its lethal ends.

As the body count climbs, Tess is assisted by Detective Ron Stanford, a NYPD homicide specialist tracking a brutal serial killer whose ritualistic cycle of murder and mutilation targeting bike messengers is escalating to fever pitch.

Tess's battle to survive propels her into a deadly underworld where she must become judge and executioner, challenging her core beliefs about morality, justice and love.

Q & A for Fatal Exchange with bestselling author Russell Blake

Question: Fatal Exchange features a female protagonist in a complex conspiracy/intrigue thriller. What was it like writing a female lead character, & why did you do it?

Russell Blake: I wanted to create a hero who was complex, troubled, but had tremendous inner strength. I conceptualized that character as female, in the mold of an Angelina Jolie-type kick-ass protagonist, & the image stuck with me. Tess wrote herself, & what I thought would be a challenge turned out to be one of the easiest characters to visualize & feel.

Q: Fatal Exchange has two discreet & seemingly separate story lines. Why?

RB: I wanted to push the envelope & try something different. I always wanted to do a serial killer plot, a la Tom Harris. In the end, I decided to experiment with two concurrent stories, & see if I could maintain the suspense of both & then dovetail them in the end. I think it worked well; both keep the reader engaged & build plot tension, and they resolve nicely.

Q: Fatal Exchange is written differently than most thrillers. Can you comment on that? It seems to speed along at a faster clip

RB: Another experiment. I thought it would be interesting to write the literary equivalent of a season of "24" - a series of short, punchy scenes with huge impact ingrained in each. I started the first 50 pages like that & liked the effect, so finished the book that way.

Q: Some of the scenes are so graphic as to make one wince. Have you gotten flack for that?

RB: I had a few readers say they were cringing, reading between their fingers as they hid their eyes. That tells me I did my job. I think good fiction should take you out of reality, & be so evocative as to put you in the story. I wanted something gritty & visceral & shocking. The scenes are paced for specific effect, & I like how they wound up working.

It's a fine line, because what makes one reader uncomfortable will be too tame for the next. But I will warn readers that if they're hoping for some sanitized, anodyne, milquetoast story, they're better served looking elsewhere. This ain't your grandma's thriller...

USA Today Bestselling Author

As Seen in The Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Tribune, and The Times!

"
A sadistically good writer."
- The Kindle Book Review

"Russell Blake writes with a brisk intensity and pulse-pounding power. Jump in and hang on for a nonstop thrill ride." - Scott Nicholson, Liquid Fear

"Blake at his best!" - Steven Konkoly, Black Flagged Redux, Black Flagged, The Jakarta Pandemic

"This is a classic thriller from a writer who knows how to keep you sitting in suspense for hours on end. I enjoyed all the elements of this story--the characters, the settings and the detail of his plot elements. I especially enjoyed the character of Tess and believe she'll make a good serial character for future books. I'll make no secret that I'm a fan of Russell's writing; his blog is alternately uproariously funny and insightful and I particularly enjoyed his Gazillion parody. For any readers of either his blog or Gazillion, prepare yourselves for a different side to his writing. He's a serious thriller writer, someone we'll all be hearing more from in the future. He's got legs for those who love thrillers."
- David Lender, Vaccine Nation, Bull Street, Trojan Horse and Gravy Train

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Thriller! July 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a book that took me completely by surprise. I thought I'd give it a shot based on the Amazon description and 5 star reviews, and it quickly became a page turner I couldn't put down. The plot is complex, sort of like a Forsyth or Ludlum, and the characters are gripping. It's a real novel. Can't wait to see what Blake does next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Action Packed Thrill Ride October 23, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Blake's Fatal Exchange had me hooked from the first chapter. It is a fast paced, action packed thriller that you won't want to put down.
It begins with a watch dealer who sells a million dollars worth of watches to an Asian businessman. When it turns out the bills are counterfeit the game is on. The counterfeiters realize some less than perfect bills are out and they want them back before anyone knows they exist.
Tess, a bicycle courier, is the daughter of the watch dealer and when the bodies start stacking up she realizes she's probably next.
Throw in a serial killer that is targeting female bike messengers and you have one more twist in the plot.
Blake ties the plots together brilliantly in a turn you won't see coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Who Done It October 9, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Written in the style of Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle with more twists and turns then a piece of licorice this book kept me guessing to the end. I loved the interaction between the characters and the details of the crimes presented. I, of course, had it all worked out (not) but it kept me mesmerized throughout the whole book.

It was a joy to read such a book without getting lost or bored. The author kept things in order but still added the Miss Marple variety of down home detective and the `keep your eyes open so you don't miss the obvious clue' of the Holmes variety.

For an old fashioned just plain good who done it this was the best one I've read so far. I highly recommend it for this genre and may even go back and read it again to make sure I got all the subtleties the author was intending. I just really liked this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars GRITTY June 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Riding down the streets of New York, Tess, a one time programmer who has kind of lost herself in life, wants a no brainer type of job and finds one at Red Cap bike messengers. Life is simple with her job and her no commitment relationship fella Nick until all hell breaks loose.

Mr. Blake is able to simultaneously take us into two separate and distinct stories that somehow have a tie-in. With a touch of romance, with bits of gore (well more than bits), the author carefully details the sequence of events which all finally ties together in the end. I personally didn't think he would be able to do it, but he does.

Tess finally realizes that she has "stayed in denial" and now must "live in her own reality". It is a very well written, detailed novel. It is a must read. I hope Mr. Blake has another one or two of these novels tucked under his belt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read July 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Like others have mentioned, this book contains some very graphic depictions of torture, so it is not for the faint of heart. With that being said- wow! It is rare to find a self-published book with this quality of writing and editing. I wasn't sold based on the description, but I went with the stellar reviews, and I'm so glad I did! 5 stars.
