5.0 out of 5 stars An essential book to understand personality disorders

Stuart Yudofsky has done it again. He has written a book which not only has extensive clinical descriptions of the different personality disorders,he deals with the treatments which are standard, acceptable and evidence based. The language of the book is eloquent and easy to read -- readers do not stumble on the psychiatric jargons. I think APA and Stuart yudofsky...

1.0 out of 5 stars Ineffectual Insight
This book is the work of a medical bureaucrat struggling to claim a legacy of insight. In short, a failure in motive as well as design and execution.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential book to understand personality disorders, July 15, 2005
This review is from: Fatal Flaws: Navigating Destructive Relationships with People with Disorders... (Paperback)

I think APA and Stuart yudofsky has done a great service to the general public through publishing such a book. This book will also be extremely helpful for the psychiatric trainees because the case studies reflect the extensive knowledge and empathy of an astute and expert clinician.

I have a few criticisms -- Dr Yudofsky has not covered a few clinically important PDs like passive agressive or depressive personalities-- i am not exactly sure why that is the case. besides schema therapy and DBT seems to be underrepresented, but these therapies have a minor but significant and growing evidence base.

I wholeheartedly wish wide publication of this piece of work.

5.0 out of 5 stars eye opener, June 7, 2007

I wish that I had read this book long ago. Persons with personality disorders can cause serious damage in the lives of those around them, yet most persons know far too little about these disorders. What I found most useful were the first three chapters, wherein Dr. Yudofsky offers valuable tools to discern whether others may have personality disorders and also nine helpful guiding principles. But the other chapters give the reader an overview of what each of the disorders may look like. Great intro to the topic.

I read and re-read this book marking each page of those in my family and others in my life who clearly exhibited many of the
symptoms and disorders so clearly explained with case studies and symptomatic charts..Dr. Yudofsky's ability to pinpoint whether these FLAWS and FATAL FLAWS can be treated was excellant...
I highly recommend this book to the lay person or professional in need of THEIR OWN role clarification with FATALLY FLAWED people in their lives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vivid and fascinating case studies, December 29, 2011

This review is from: Fatal Flaws: Navigating Destructive Relationships with People with Disorders... (Paperback)
This book provides great in-depth clinical narratives about people with personality disorders. It is thoroughly readable, both for clinicians, clients, etc. It is one of my personal favorites, and one that i find myself often re-reading, especially when I have a difficult case! My only complaint is that two of the narratives are based on clients that Dr. Yudofsky did not personally interview. Though he readily acknowledges this in the chapters and provides justification for his preliminary diagnoses based on interviews with family members, etc., I wish he would have pulled all of his case studies directly from his extensive practice history, instead. Still, an excellent read that is both interesting and informative.

This book is for those learned folk with insight into personality disorders--personally I think it is a too much information for a layperson, however it is very detailed in the insight it provides. I liken it unto a person reading about an appendectomy then attempting to perform one. That being said, the book is a must have for any one in the mental health field. It explains the motivations behind the madness and gives the readers tools to use to deal with the individual suffering the disorder. Ultimately though, I think that the book will provide a beneficial base for the lay person to use to start developing an understanding of the fatal flaws, but it is not a replacement for the appropriate professional intervention.
