Book Description

November 1, 1998
Imagine this: You are sitting at your computer working away. Now, for some strange reason you feel distracted. You stop what you are doing and go out and do something totally off the wall, against your will, and with dangerous consequences. Kurt Sloan, a brilliant but socially maladjusted computer genius, designs a program which uses subliminal imagery on his unsuspecting office mates for his own amusement. But when his cold hearted boss, Geneva Brent, pushes him too far, Kurt places a powerful message on her computer-to deadly effect. Investigative reporter David Chan, suspecting foul play takes on what will become the case of his life, and death....

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Owing to unfortunate circumstances beyond his control, San Francisco investigative reporter David Chan is sitting at a sidewalk cafe when a jumping suicide splats beside him. His subsequent pursuit of a story makes him a hero more than once as he traces the method behind the madness of a computer programmer who uses subliminal screen messages to get his way. Whether credibly plotted or not, this story suffers at times from foreshortened prose, lack of transition, and shallow characterization. Interesting subject matter but a marginal purchase.

From Kirkus Reviews

A nerd is a terrible thing to waste, especially if hes a misfit like Kurt Sloane. Raised by a working prostitute, ridiculed by his schoolmates, Kurt's grown into a computer systems administrator at Security Insurance's San Francisco office without shedding his fierce social insecurities or his rabid hatred of the women who spurn his how-about-it-babe advances. One day he gets the neat idea of humiliating his officemates by posting subliminal suggestions on their computers, and you can probably supply the rest of the plot and dialogue of this crude, uninspired, strangely old-fashioned first novel yourself. (One line, though, you might not have had the guts to use: ``We've just had another office manager jump off the roof''). Detecting honors go to investigative reporter David Chan--an eminently suitable nemesis for Sloane, who doesn't like Chinks any more than he likes bitches. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP.
