I positively LOVED LOVED LOVED this book! When I first read Fatal Infatuation it grabbed my attention and heart unlike any story I read before. Since then I've read volumes two and three and consider myself an Almost Human junkie for life. Fatal Infatuation kept me reading until the wee hours of the morning just to see what happened next!
Melanie Nowak has created a wonderful world that is all her own, while merging many different genres in the process. She is definitely one of my favorite authors. It's obvious she took great care in developing the plot and awesome characters, (Cain, Felicity, Ben, Allie, Sindy, etc...) under a plethora of wit and imagination. If you are a reader who loves vampires, romance, mystery, humor and suspense then you've certainly come to the right place. Ms Nowak penned a world that just keeps getting better and better. By the time you finish volume three you won't want the story to end. But don't worry, volume four - Born to Blood in the second trilogy is available and it is fantastic! I won't say anymore least I spoil any surprises. I have relatives in Italy who loved the first trilogy and are addicts as well. In addition, I've recommended Almost Human to other paranormal genre readers and they too are hooked. I'm really looking forward to continuing this great roller coaster ride with all its twists and turns. I suggest you buy all three volumes and taste the venom for yourself! But don't say I didn't warn you... this stuff IS addicting. Happy reading!

Addictiive, fascinating, and pleasant stories!,

I had been searching for a series with the romance and action of twilight. I was pleasantly surprised to find the Almost Human trilogy. The author, Melanie Nowak, spent time developing each character with care. The plot is original and keeps you interested through out the three book series. Each book starts exactly where the last left off. I read all three books in four days and left me wanting more. According to the author, there will be more Almost Human trilogies concentrating on relationships between different characters - YEA!
The adult romance is grittier and darker than Twilight but the relationships between lovers warms your heart in more ways than just the obvious one. As in the twilight series, the main characters were well developed so that the reader feels the emotions of each. You will fall in love with Cain, Felicity, and Ben as I have. The Almost Human books are independently published so there are some grammatical errors, but not enough to distract me from this wonderful story!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It made you feel like you were a part of what was going on. The characters were awesome! I have always liked the books that made your really hate a character through a good portion of the book and then really like them at the end. I won't spoil this for anyone and tell you who that character was for me but I thought all of the main characters was awesome! I also like to judge a book on how well the descriptions of the characters and the scenes are. No disappointment there, the book played through my head like a movie. The book was both well written and flowed well! I can't wait to read the next one! This is a great book, don't miss out!

LOVED IT,

I have always been a fan of vampires and Ms. Nowak's first volume of the trilogy was great. The way the author alternated chapters between characters was very clever and kept me interested. All the characters were developed nicely and I could feel their emotions. I was unsure of who the good or bad guy was and that kept me thinking throughout the book. I have been waiting for another series similar to the Twilight Series and after reading the first volume, I can't wait to sink my teeth into the other two volumes. There are some unanswered questions that I hope will be answered in the next two volumes but I knew that this was not a stand alone novel before I started reading it. If you like vampires, mysteries and romance this is the book for you.

Being a fan of vampires and paranormal romance, I was excited to read this book. I was not disappointed. Fatal Infatuation is well-written and very engaging. The vampires act like vampires, and the heroine is strong and smart enough to question the sanity of falling for one of the Undead. The chapters alternate between the human girl's and the male vampire's points of view, which I thought was very clever and led to a better understanding of both lead characters. It was a very enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

This book was better than I expected honestly. I don't have a lot of experience reading indie authors, and was pleasantly surprised! The book had a good flow and the characters are solid and well thought out.
Felicity was (to me) a very realistic college student and the college setting seemed perfect. Possibly my favorite aspect of the book was the school, meeting of classmates/coworkers, and dorm life. Unlike the Morganville Vampires series (whose first book I was unable to finish), the setting is exactly how I remember college and other than the lack of a roommate (not sure that ever happens!) everything was entirely believable. Ben and Alyson were probably my two favorite characters. I loved their friendship and that they were mostly realistic about a vampire threat. If I had a friend who fell in love with the wrong person (in this case a vampire of course) I think I'd behave exactly how Ben has. He also seems very multidimensional and well fleshed out. Alyson is able to be silly and serious at the right times and really shone through to me. My least favorite character has to be Cain. There were some aspects of him I truly enjoyed, like the relationship he has with Sindy for example. I did think that his drama with Felicity, however, was unbelievable at most times. He's a bit too "emo" for my tastes. Perhaps its being able to see his side of the story that puts me off a bit, because he definitely loses the tough, mysterious image that is portrayed in the beginning as soon as you get to see inside his head. Rather than being able to think that he's truly falling in love with Felicity, all I can pick up is that he's lonely and therefore wants human companionship and Felicity will do because she doesn't treat him like a vampire. Not very romantic in my eyes. My biggest problem was definitely all the editing errors. I'm sure this was out of the author's hands and so it doesn't reflect upon her, but whoever is in charge of publishing these should do a better job in checking for errors. Its very difficult to stay inside the story when you're constantly bumping into grammatical problems! Overall, very entertaining read and I will be following up with the next book. I started out by reading the sample (I'm glad these are made available now) and purchased the rest of the novel as soon as I finished it. Great job by a beginning author, and I look forward to seeing how the story progresses.

This book was absolutely fantastic! There are several characters involved in the main plot and they are all very well developed. I am so intrigued by all of them and can't wait to read the remaining books. None of the characters are completely good or completely bad which makes them that much more interesting. This is a young adult book that was appealing to me (an adult) as well. The romance is definely there, but nothing graphic. I highly recommend this book!

Fatal Infatuation is the first book of the series Almost Human by new author, Melanie Nowak. I was fortunate enough to read this series on a friends Kindle after hearing about it in the forums. Loving all things vampire, I gave it a try and couldn't stop reading until I was finished with the third book!! When I heard it was available in print, I snatched up my own personal copies...
In Fatal Infatuation, Nowak tells the story of Cain, a 340 yr old vampire who has come terms with his immortality, but not without a price. In the small college town where he resides, he happens upon Felicity, a welcome breath of fresh air in his life of few rewards. Enter Sindy, a young vampire who is bent on making Cain's life a living hell, but who perhaps has more in common with him than the humans he befriends... Nowak's characters will wrap around your heart and won't let go. If you love vampires, do yourself a favor and give Almost Human a try. You won't be disappointed!

I discovered Melanie Nowak's Almost Human series through the Amazon message boards and after reading reviews from other helpful readers I decided to give it a go. From the first chapter I was totally engrossed. I can honestly say this book had me looking forward to three a.m. feedings with my newborn because I couldn't wait to get back into the story. I had a hard time sleeping because I was tied up in knots thinking about the characters and what they would do.
It is a new take on the typical vampire/human girl story line. The characters are not clearly defined as being either good or evil, which kept me guessing as to where the story would go and I was amazed at how my feelings for different characters changed throughout the series. I thought the dialogue was believable and natural, the characters were three-dimensional, and the love story became a love triangle which I didn't see coming and was pleasantly surprised with. It wasn't your typical HEA where you meet the hero/heroine in the first few pages, watch them go through the pre-requisite number of obstacles before they can have their happy ending. It was messy at times and the characters did things that made me want to throw the book across the room. But the ending did wrap up in a satisfying way and I found myself giddy and smiling like an idiot. The author also left plenty of room to expand the series without leaving loose ends dangling. I also appreciated that while there was plenty of excitement and action, it wasn't a race from one cliffhanger to the next so I couldn't catch my breath. There were quiet moments where it became more of a character study. I felt like I really got to know the characters, and while I didn't always like what they did, I was able to follow their thought process and understand why they did it. There were a few parts that dragged a little bit, but others that were over far too quickly for me. The author does a great job of drawing the reader in to be a part of the relationships, while remaining distanced enough to be unbiased and see the situation for what it was. When I was finished with all three books I re-read my favorite parts and was amazed at the clever way she allowed all the pieces to fall just where they needed to. In short, I loved these books, and I've read just about everything in the PNR genre this year. This is an ongoing series that is worth getting invested in, but here's a warning: if you read the first one, be prepared to get the next two because you won't be able to sleep until you find out what happens next :)

A solid read...,

Overall I would say this was a solid read. I liked the plot development and the cliff hangers. I enjoyed the descriptions of the places the characters frequented and story lines. I also liked the characters. At times the secondary characters were more interesting than the primary characters but they were still enjoyable. The one downside to this series was that the two primary characters had very long inner monologues ---frequently! The monologues seemed to be the same internal conversations over and over. Yes, we get that Cain is self loathing and struggles to do the right thing...Yes, we get that Felicity thinks Cain is perfect except for the fact that he drinks blood and we get that she is torn between her human life and becoming a vampire. The monologues were so long and frustrating at time that I had to just skim them. I couldn't bring myself to read all of them. It would have been too painful.
Overall, this was a fluid and easy read with many enjoyable parts. |
