4.0 out of 5 stars Another terrifying thriller
Again, this is the second book that I picked up that said on the cover that it was the most terrifying thriller since 'Silence of the Lambs', the first being 'Messiah' by Boris Starling which totally lived up to that statement. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not for the squeamish...
This is the second novel in the Instinct series, and it does not disappoint. Walker manages to build suspense and, through his vivid descriptions, lets readers get a real sense of what the killer is thinking during the murders. The ending wraps things up well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another terrifying thriller, July 31, 2000
This review is from: Fatal Instinct (Paperback)
Again, this is the second book that I picked up that said on the cover that it was the most terrifying thriller since 'Silence of the Lambs', the first being 'Messiah' by Boris Starling which totally lived up to that statement. Well, so does 'Fatal Instinct'! This is one of a series about FBI profiler Jessica Coran who recently captured the serial killer Matisak, who is very much like Hannibal the Cannibal. In this book, Jessica is after 'The Claw' running rampant in NYC, a sort of modern day Jack the Ripper. As in "Silence", Matisak is not one to be content on the sidelines, and finds ways to insinute his 'help' to Jessica. As the book reaches its shocking conclusion, you will be looking for the next book in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Reading for fun, February 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Fatal Instinct (Paperback)
This was the first of Walkers books that i had read and as soon as i started i couldent put it down. It was like a trap with no way to escape. It was thrilling and intense with explicit details on surroundings and methods of The Claw. If you are a first timer to Robert W. Walker than I suggest you read this one first.

5.0 out of 5 stars My 1st in Instinct Series won't be my last, February 9, 1999

I was surprised and thrilled to meet a character that I liked as much or more than Kay Scarpetta. Mr Walker has made a fan out of me and I can't wait to start all the other instinct series books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fatal Instinct nicely gruesome thriller, June 2, 2011

Fatal Instinct is the second book in Robert W. Walker's Instinct series and it does not disappoint. If anything, it ramps up the tension and pours on the gruesome details -- just the way I like my thrillers!
I really like the protagonist, Jessica Caron. An FBI medical examiner, she's one tough cookie without becoming a cold, efficient machine, which seems to be the cliche now for strong women.
In this murder investigation, Jessica is called in when a series of killings involve Jack-the-Ripper type slashings as well as missing organs. It becomes obvious soon that the killer is cannabalizing his victims, which definitely creates more urgency and adds horror to the situation. Jessica's FBI supervisor forces her to cooperate with her old nemesis, Matthew Matisak, now a resident in a federal prison for his series of murders from the first book, Killer Instinct. Matisak is sure he can lead Jessica to the killer, based on his own on-the-job training, as it were.
The book has plenty of twists and turns. I normally do not enjoy reading books which give the killer's point of view, but Walker manages to put a twist in this as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the rest of the series.

By A Customer
This review is from: Fatal Instinct (Paperback)
Fatal Instinct is a suspenseful thriller that takes you in the mind and world of a serial killer who cannibalizes his victims. Robert W. Walker uses such vivid words that let you imagine what the killer is doing and thinking during his time of the killings. He keeps you in suspense for the next kill because you never know who he is going to strike next. The images he produces with his words gives you chills up your spine and makes you think twice about you colleagues.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lacks originality with the obvious T. Harris bits, April 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Fatal Instinct (Paperback)
Is every insane serial killer given an investigation file to help nab a particulary nasty peer? It seems that way with Walker. It was quirky and interesting with Thomas Harris, but it is dreadfully cliched with Walker. Also, does Jessica have to screw every man she's involved with in an investigation?
