5.0 out of 5 stars a very satisfying chronolgy of mr. cooks genius
i have newfound respect for my bigbeat idol Norman Cook. I had heard of his extensive music background but i never really got a chance to taste it.... yummy. I was used to the fatboy slim sound and late beats international sound but i thought that he was stuck to his style like he couldn't write it any other way. This cd proved me very wrong, the only common ground...

3.0 out of 5 stars Something New but Where's the Old
This is really not your normal run of the mill Fatboy Slim. If there was a three and a half star rating, I'd rate this CD 3 1/2 stars. Now a lot of the reviews either give this CD a VERY high rating or a fairly low one. If you want an opinion from a hardcore Fatboy Slim fan (for many many years) If you like Old Fatboy Slim and I do mean OLD Fatboy Slim, as in "I'm...

i have newfound respect for my bigbeat idol Norman Cook. I had heard of his extensive music background but i never really got a chance to taste it.... yummy. I was used to the fatboy slim sound and late beats international sound but i thought that he was stuck to his style like he couldn't write it any other way. This cd proved me very wrong, the only common ground that all these songs have is that they have the Fatboy aura of just feelgood beats. Ain't nuttin wrong wit dat! This cd covers his new sound and his earlier sound which includes some reggae flavored songs and some treats like tribute to king tubby (the father of dub). If you are a dedicated norman cook fan then buy this cd! If you're an openminded techno fan and interested in the history of mr cook then check it out, it takes some getting used to but once you break the cd in its fan-damn-tastic,

Love, peace, 'n grease ya'll, Alex

4.0 out of 5 stars Old and New!, March 21, 2000
By
This review is from: Fatboy Slim - Norman Cook Collection (Audio CD)
With this release Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, puts together several previously released tracks under the project, "Beats International", most of which was produced in 1991. The CD also includes several nicely remixed songs including, Shinehead-Start an Avalanche, that features Mc'ing by, E.C. Aiken Jr, and scratching by Tyrone "Cut Master" Ffyfe. Also, several other mixes that are included on his UK release of "On The Floor At The Boutique", and his, "Fatboy Slim's Greatest Remixes". This is an excellent CD that expresses several sides of Norman's musical capabilities. This should tide your Fatboy Slim needs over until the realease of his US Debut of "On The Floor At The Boutique" and the anticipated release of "Vol. 1-Essential Selection".

5.0 out of 5 stars Norman Cook is a pioneer! Buy this CD!, November 16, 2001

All I can say is God Bless Norman Cook... this collection goes way back for me because I was a club DJ when all these songs were coming out and I used to spin quite a few of them on a regular basis. Today's dance music producers (and even many hip-hop producers) owe a lot to Norman Cook because he helped pave the way for today's scene! This CD Rocks!!! If you were clubbing back when these songs were coming out, you'll remember how refreshing they sounded compared to everything else that was going on!!! So to those who say "don't waste your money", I'd probably guess they have very limited music collections and we're bummed it wasn't "You've Come A Long Way Baby 2", and simply have a long way to come themselves when it comes to music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old School Electronica at its Best!, April 9, 2000

Norman(assumed name)Cook aka Fatboy Slim is an elctronica pioneer. This CD is nothing but awesome grooves and kickbutt music. Although, not a big house fan, this CD just seemed to click with me. Renegade Master and E.V.A. are by far my favorite! Although not as good as his Better Living Through Chemistry and You've Come A Long Way Baby its a solid peace of craftsmenship. Quit readin this, buy it, and DANCE!

5.0 out of 5 stars this is norman cook not fatboy slim, March 27, 2000
This review is from: Fatboy Slim - Norman Cook Collection (Audio CD)
I bought this cd for a roadtrip to Austin and it was perfect! It isn't as technoey as his other stuff, but it is still good. It's also very old skool. If you're looking for something like better living...or you've come a long... this isn't it. However, if you want something with clean basslines and catchy lyrics, go for it. Altogether, I'd like to see more music of this style from Norman Cook.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amalgamation of different sounds- all smashing!, July 18, 2000

If you know Norman Cook only from his "You've Come A Long Way Baby" Fatboy slim, Funksoulbrother days, you might think he was all about gettin' cats up on the dance floor with pouding beats and heavy house- but no way, his range of talent and influences go way beyond that.

This album is completely different from "You've Come A Long Way Baby," but oh, my what a pleasure to listen to. Check out tracks like "Left my Wallet in El Segundo" (my favorite cut) and I defy not to crank it and jam out in your home, your jeep, your wheelchair, or wherever you happen to be. All the styles blend effortlessly here and you should blend effortlessly with the hip crowd too when you throw this on at the next party at your digs.

This album has it all, reagga beats, old school hip-hop influences, house, dub, you name it. And its all put together to create some very funky, very tasty tracks a la Norman Cook.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent works by the master, April 16, 2000

Everyone will probably expect somethin different when they pick up this CD. Some will expect the acid-y bass and heavy beats of his first Fatboy Slim CD. Others the lighter pop-influenced big beat of his second. Neither will be get EXACTLY what they wish for, but they WILL get somethin just as good.

From the amazing remix of A Tribe Called Quest's song Left My Wallet in El Segundo, to the reggae styles you probably never knew Norman had on all the Beats International tracks. Of course, no collection of Norman's would be complete without the infamous Rengade Master remix.

But to top off the CD, you hear Payback by James Brown, the Final Mixdown. A very good track in it's own, and very deserving of being on this electic collection of reggae, big beat, and many other styles. Pick this one up, you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars not for people with narrow tastes and more narrow minds, March 13, 2007
This review is from: Fatboy Slim - Norman Cook Collection (Audio CD)
I had to write something after I saw a couple bad reviews here from people who obviously identify Cook/Fatboy with a very narrow genre, but if you like this artist not for some genre he fits into, but for his endless creativity and the fun he jams into his funk, BUY THIS CD. I can see how some people can't handle everything going on here, from a tribute to original reggae dubmaster King Tubby, to funkmaster James Brown, to "roll the dice" a precursor to the acid beats of "better living thru chemistry", to obscure 60's French synth-rock of Jean Jacques Perry, to Steve Miller (!)... Cook makes it all work and he makes it all his own.

This album is pretty groovy and funky, but not hugely exciting. It's good background music, or Saturday bopping-around-the-house-doing-some-housework music. Nice and happy, and sure to get you grooving, but it's before the time of Funk Soul Brother, so it's much more basic than his later stuff. Simple, smooth, fun, funky, but not Weapon of Choice.
