Wonderful Debut Album,
This review is from: Fate Is the Hunter (Mcup) (Audio CD)
I "discovered" Kate Earl's music several months ago and was blown away by her talent. I ordered her EP (which has "Silence", "Sweet Sixteen" and "Anything" from this album on it)and waited anxiously. A few days later, it arrived in a bubble mailer filled out by Kate herself (with the message "Kate Earl Loves You" scrawled on the back flap).
Kate Earl no longer needs to process and mail her own CD orders, and I'm delighted. It's time for her career to take off. She has a lovely, sensuous voice not quite like anyone I've heard before. Her songwriting skills are exceptional and belie her young age. Kate's music strikes me as filling a unique niche. "Officer" has a little bit of a rock beat, but the rest of the songs don't. This album is very easy to listen to, but I would not demean it by calling it "easy listening" music. Kate has a sound and style of her own. I've nothing more to add except "Buy it! You won't be disappointed."

not bubble gummy pop-y 'safe' crap...this chick's got a story to tell. she's got opinions and she's not afraid to use them, not the boring run of the mill solo female artist. Soulful, fun, and actually HAS a voice.

Fans of Rickie Lee Jones, Carole King, and Joni Mitchell should surely snatch this one up quickly. Insiders say she's the next big thing out of L.A. and we can hardly argue with them. Watching her music and onstage personna evolve over the past few years it was clear early on that she was a fast learner (those first few shows were rough). My favorite song for far too long has been "Hero," a song she usually plays last at her shows and fittingly comes toward the end of a rather lovely debut album.

This is easy listening music. Kate has a nice voice and her music is a good choice to listen to when I'm relaxing or have a few friends over. I actually hadn't heard of her, but seen her CD advertised in a magazine. I bought it not knowing what she sounded like, but am very glad I did.

Kate Earl Takes Off,
This review is from: Fate Is the Hunter (Mcup) (Audio CD)
I first heard of Kate Earl's music when I saw that she was collaborating with three members from Incubus on this album. Going to her website offers the opportunity to listen to three songs right off the bat. In just a few seconds I was blown away by her voice, the depth and variety of her lyrics, and the layers of her sound. You can hear her self-admitted influences of Bjork on her tone and pitch, which is never a bad thing. I was initially a little weary of some serious Jewel wannabe comparisons, but they are nothing alike. She is too musically talented to be thrown in with pop and too dynamic for a folk label. The same variety that drew me to Incubus applies here, and maybe that's why my boys hooked up on this album. AND SHE STILL IS PLAYING SMALL VENUES, CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HER LIVE!

This cd has very good arrangements, very good musicians, very good songs, and a remarkably great singer. I listen to it over and over. I am afraid that my wife will discern my true feelings: I want to have Kate Earl's babies. I can hardly wait for her next offering.

sincere, and insanely talented, her music will blow you away. i feel like standing on the top of the world and telling every living soul about her music. it's that good. she's got more than your average potential...and "fate is the hunter" is truly worth every cent you spend. there's really no way to describe it, so go see for yourself and listen to samples online, or at the bookstore; buy songs on iTunes, or go out and buy the album itself!

Just for everyone's information Jose, Mike, and Ben of Incubus do the drums, 12-string guitar and Bass respectivley for the CD. And she has a crazy good voice.

OMG that voice!,

The first five tracks are a string of great songs that stand on their own, one after another. My favorites are "Officer" - that slinky beat is ingenious, although the song has a different feel from the other songs on the album. And "Cry Sometimes" is just achingly beautiful. The hidden track at the end is a great way to end an album like this - just a great atmospheric, almost orchestral instrumental. The mixing on this album does not at all feel amateurish unlike many other "indie" acts out there, and is not overproduced either. The music complements and augments Kate's voice. It's just right.
However, some of the tracks in between (#6-#10) are musically unremarkable, but not everything can be perfect on an album - hey this is her first, right? And I credit her for only putting 11 tracks and not, say, 15 songs with more filler like the trend seems to be nowadays. If you listen closely enough, the lyrics are honest and endearing. A singer with a voice like hers should have more publicity than she has got so far. But Kate will just have to remain my well-kept secret with that come-hither look on the album cover. And I like her that way.

I discovered Kate Earl's music on MySpace. All the songs are excellent but my favorites are Someone To Love, Officer, Silence, Cry Sometimes, and Free. Kate is on a journey and, from listening to her newer offerings, she has left behind the style on this album. I like this style the best for her voice and I highly recommend this album to all.
