Book Description

September 14, 2007
Arianna Broun, a Scottish born colonial American has been haunted by the reoccurring dream of a phantom Scottish warrior. Her infatuation with the dream intensifies until All Hallows' Eve, when the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest. After several bizarre encounters she runs to her safe haven deep in the woods. When dawn comes too early, Arianna is eager to go home. But fate has other plans.

Laird Iain Mac'Lomain has long awaited the arrival of his promised bride. She claims to not be the woman intended for him but she fits the description given him of her, all fire and defiance. That defiance will end up costing them everything and rips them apart. However, a Scottish Chieftain with magic at his disposal is capable of most anything. Will he hold Arianna in his arms again or is she lost to him forever? Only time will tell.

From the Inside Flap

"I will dance with my wife now, cousin." Iain's tone left no room for debate.

"But of course, my laird," Malcolm said. A thin grin turned half his mouth up and the other half down.

Arianna was tossed from one man to the other.

Relieved to be free of Malcolm's grasp she found herself in a far more dangerous one.

"Are you enjoying yourself?" Iain had seen her disappear into the throng of people with Malcolm. Ready to commit murder, he watched the two cling to each other. He would deal with his cousin later, his wife now.

"Aye."

"Is Malcolm to your liking?" No wife of his would behave this way.

"He's nice enough."

"Nice enough? What do you mean by that?" Iain tightened his hold on her.

"I mean that he's nice enough but I'm glad that I'm not dancing with him anymore," Arianna said.

Iain was at a loss for words. It seemed he may have misinterpreted things.

"Are you jealous?" Arianna's heart paused.

Iain slid his hand down her back. "No."

"No?" Her body reacted when his hand slid even lower.

"No." He pulled her lower half against him.

"No." This time she gasped the word against his chest. Now Arianna understood why she couldn't open the barn door for Aunt Marie; and what Edward had meant when he'd said he was aroused! She closed her eyes, breath irregular.

Iain's other hand cupped the back of cupped her neck, beneath her hair. He moved slower. The man could dance. His head lowered and nuzzled the side of her neck.
Ripples of pleasure washed over her. Was she still saying no?

"I never imagined..." He whispered in her ear. "This."

When his lips met her neck she shivered. A new sensation swallowed her.

"Iain."

"Aye."

"I, I'm not, I, this is... I." What was she saying?

He silenced her with his mouth.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could be much better..., March 4, 2010

Sky Purington tells a good tale but there are so many things that could be better about this I just couldn't agree with the 5 star comments. [warning: spoiler alert] Arianna often overreacts...the dialog at times seems forced; and the action just doesn't flow. Scotland's history is dropped into the text like a cut and paste and made me just want to skip those parts. The author doesn't handle the lovemaking scenes well either. Except for kissing, foreplay seems nonexistent. ("Her eyes shot open in shock as he claimed her."--what?) Little is described in graphic terms. So one has to imagine. Purington does the equivalent of a camera panning the trees above the couple...shutting us out of what is happening and leaving questions. Was he gentle as his sister said he would be? Although his kissing was described as "patient" his claiming her didn't seem so. What was going through Arianna's mind as he took her virginity--what did she expect? Little is said. I felt so much was untold. The author's language at such times is overly flowery ("Their bodies soared above the trees sheltering them and over the highland mountains that loomed beyond."--really? And, "Stars colored her vision and lunar light illuminated him while he defeated her."--what?) And, after so much passion in the woods, why does he just pick up and take her back to the "gathering" of the clans (that seemed cold)--it just didn't feel right. And details are missed...like when did she give Edward back his ring? I kept waiting for it. Never happened. And what happened to the 11 years in Ferchar's vision? Did those take place and if so, where? And why the vague suggestion at the end that Iain was leaving and they wouldn't be together? Was that an attempt to add suspense? I felt like a ping pong ball. I'm sorry but I've read better. Oh yeah, there are annoying typos (including one use of Iain's name when Liam is intended). This could be so much better. I hope the author takes these suggestions to heart. For an author who gets it right, I suggest you read Kresley Cole's MacCarrick Brothers trilogy; it is just superb.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good story, but a lot of room for improvement, October 23, 2010

This was a decent story, but the writing left a lot to be desired. It seemed a contest almost of "how many metaphors and similes can I pack into one paragraph" honestly, I got tired of wading through the wordiness and finished most of the book by skimming. There is an abruptness to the dialogue too... The transitions just aren't smooth. Maybe I'm too picky, but I just couldn't enjoy the book as much I expected and it was all due to the writing style.

Having said that, the story itself is good and I'm planning to read the second in the trilogy in the hopes that the writing style will gave matured.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good!, September 10, 2009
This review is from: Fate's Monolith: The Mac'Lomain Trilogy (Paperback)
I wasn't sure about this one at first but glad I bought it. It introduced quite a few lovable characters in addition to the Hero and Heroine (who were great). I found myself paying attention, who would do what next, would I have to jump into the book and kick the hero's behind if he didn't wise up? All I can say is I'm glad this is a trilogy because I want to read more!
