Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

When he died in 1960, Father Browne, Jesuit priest/photographer, left a graphic legacy of some 42,000 negatives, annotated and indexed, capturing Ireland and its people; the collection is considered an important archive in Ireland where it is housed, a record of change within the country, and a testament to a skilled photographer. The editor of this selection of black-and-white photographs, a fellow Jesuit, has arranged the pictures by the counties in Ireland's four provinces. The images, all from the first half of this century, tell stories of people at work, at home; we witness children at play, enter grand houses and humble cottages and see reflections of age and youth. The editor's preface to this well-designed pictorial history reveals the charming man behind the lens.

This review is from: Father Browne's Ireland: Remarkable Images of People and Places (Hardcover)
This is a fantastic collection of photographs from ireland taken in the early 1900s to 1950. it has pictures from every county in ireland from times gone by.they are pictures of everyday life, and would be of great interest to photographers and historians alike. its the kind of book that you can pick up at any time and find something new in every picture. some of the scenes are long since gone while others are in existance to this day. i am very happy with this book and have since bought more books by the same photographer. i would recommend it to anybody who is interested in black and white pictures of life in ireland. ten out of ten.
