Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Appropriating one of his late cousin's twin sons as heir so he can avoid marriage seems a capital idea to the alcohol-besotted Duke of Ware. Unfortunately, the boy's mother doesn't agree; and when Graceanne Warrington storms into his hall in all her magnificent fury, his problems suddenly take on new, more interesting dimensions. The hero and heroine of this tale are beautifully matched and tormented by two mischievous three-year-olds. A cast of well-developed secondary characters people this light, often hilarious Regency that features deft language and priceless timing. Metzger has a long list of Regencies to her credit, including Lady Whilton's Wedding (Fawcett, 1995), and readers will be waiting for this one.

Review
He's thirty two years old, twice widowed, and he needs an heir. Leland Warrington, the Duke of Ware, wants more than just an heir. He wants to be an involved parent. But at the rate he is going, Leland feels as if that will never happen. One night while at his club, Leland and a friend are discussing his situation, and he blames it all on his deceased cousin Tony, who would have been his heir. Their discussion of Tony leads to the solution of the problem. Tony's widow has three year old twin boys! The Duke of Ware writes to Graceanne Warrington, informing her that he wants the eldest boy as his heir. This pricks Graceanne's maternal instincts and it sets the mood for the confrontation between Leland and Graceanne. So when the two actually meet, Graceanne looses her temper, and her ladylike self control. Leland thinks she is magnificent as she continues her tirade against him, yet he is nonetheless adamant about having the boy as his heir. He pursues a relationship with the children, and circumspectly, with Graceanne. Leland proves to be quite capable of handling the boys, but more than that, he has won their hearts. But their mother is another matter as Graceanne seems to be indifferent to his charms, or so he thinks. The Duke is called away by the Foreign Office and Graceanne's world falls apart. Where is the Duke when she needs him? Upon his return to England, Leland finds that Graceanne and the boys are in Ireland, but that's not all he finds! Undaunted by what he believes to be her treachery and despite it all, he still wants her son as his heir. Graceanne, distressed that he would believe the worst of her, will not tell him the truth as her pride won't let her - until she fears losing him to the beautiful Eleanor Ridgemont. Graceanne has made up her mind to tell Leland the truth, but it's too late, as he overhears her conversation with her supposed lover. Christmas and New Years, a time for happiness and new beginnings is coming, but will it be one to celebrate? Barbara Metzger has penned a delightful romance! This wonderful story involves mischievous three year olds who steal the scenes but because of them, a romance flourishes! Ms. Metzger creates and defines such believable characters - their personalities are very unique and they play well off each other. Truly delightful! A unique premise that is witty and charming! Ms. Metzger has told an original, humorous, captivating story! Father Christmas is a heart warming story that will be sure to lift your spirits! Father Christmas is a romance book for all seasons!Gloria Miller -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. 5.0 out of 5 stars BUT IT IS A REPRINT, October 24, 2008
Of course this is a good book because it's a Metzger but also because it's a FLIPPING REPRINT. Dagnabit, publishers, give Metzger a contract for a short trad. regency, okay? Stop making her write the longer ones. They're fine and dandy, but she isn't at the top of her game with them. By not letting her loose with the perfect shorter length, you're stifling the absolute master at this genre. And face it, as we all wearily slog through this financial crisis, we need all the lovely fluffy fun we can get. Get her started on new trad regencies!
Grr! GRRR!

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming, December 20, 1999
By Stacey (Michigan) - See all my reviews
I loved this book. I'm tired of reading trashy porn novels that have no good literature in them whatsoever. This book gave me a good feeling inside when I finished it. I would recommend reading it. Especially this time of year.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average, October 16, 2008
Father Christmas is an cute, if somewhat light regency about a widow Graceanne with two twin boys who falls for a local nobleman. I enjoyed the beginning, but I began to lose interest after the first half. The story meandered and I just didn't care what happened to Graceanne and the duke. The antics of the twins, Prue, and Leland just didn't captivate me like the editorial review suggested. The romance itself was rather tepid and a lot of time was spent with the twins, the sister and other minor characters. I confess I did not finish and gave up after 3/4 of this.

2.0 out of 5 stars All fluff...
I went into reading this story by Metzger knowing that it was of the light old short regency type but I can understand why these types have died a death to most readers. Read more
