Charged with the responsibility of seeing his friend's widowed sister-in-law and young son safely to a holiday gathering at a remote estate on the Devonshire moors, the rather disreputable Marquis of Wetherby finds himself idolized by a child, pursued by a flirt, kidnapped by a highwayman, dumped in the snow, taken for a simpleton, and head over heels in love for the first time in his profligate life. Although the "other woman" is a bit much and the heroine unbelievably naive, most of the characters in this holiday Regency are beautifully rendered. Fans of Girard's previous novels (Charade of Hearts, Zebra, 1996) will find this one rewarding reading. Girard lives in Maitland, Florida.
