Season 4 the best season and box set so far!,
By Mahatma Kane Jeeves II (Long Island, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Father Knows Best: Season Four (DVD)
Although seasons 1-3 have been wonderful via SHOUTS! great dvd sets season 4 hits it out of the park from the great news on the back of the dvd box "all 33 Uncut episodes" to each of the episodes themselves. Many are excellent episodes and the rest are all very good television. A standout is MR BEAL MEETS HIS MATCH, this rarely seen episode which was never shown in the package that The Family Channel aired in the 1980's and early 1990's is a dark and sinister episode with a really good payoff. Another standout is the episode in which legendary actress Greer Garson guest stars. After watching the entire set you will feel sad there aren't any more episodes left in the set. The cast is now hitting their stride and totally believable as a family, Robert Young and Jane Wyatt turn in outstanding performances week after week, Billy Gray's perfomances were always on the mark and he could be comical and yet serious and displayed a great range as Bud as did Elinor Donahue as Betty, the entire crew are all working in tandem with the cast to turn out a show that has become along with LEAVE IT TO BEAVER a classic example of 1950's televsion and something that all of us have wished life was really like if only for 1/2 hour a day! Print quality is clear and sound is crisp on most of the episodes if not all again especially taking into account these shows have not been restored possibly because FKB has not been in syndication in years and it took a while to figure out where the rights to broadcast and home video really belonged - and thanks must go to SHOUT! for releasing the classic show along with thanks to Robert Young's grandson Bill Proffit, the estate of Eugene Rodney and SONY for opening ther vaults to SHOUT! so unedited episodes could be utilized!
This is a prime example of the good that can come out of all parties working together - SONY is not profiting from the video release of the series having no home video rights but they have co-operated in supplying the uncut versions instead of cut syndication versions that were out there for years going back to the 1960's through 1990's! BRAVO! Bring on Season 5!

Why no commentary from Billy Gray?,
By
This review is from: Father Knows Best: Season Four (DVD)
We've heard from Elinor Donahue and Lauren Chapin on previous FKB releases, but not from Billy Gray (Bud). Mr. Gray wrote me an email a few months ago stating that he'd be happy to do commentary on some episodes. Apparently, he hasn't been asked. My question for Shout Factory is: Why not??? I would love to hear Mr. Gray's perspective and memories of the show!

Father Knows Best Seasons one-three,

This review is from: Father Knows Best: Season Four (DVD)
This is a terrific series, not only for its entertainment value, but also for its moral and social value. If the youths of today were raised on these instead of the superficial one-track sitcoms of today, they would have something wonderful to prepare them for life in an adult world.
The casting was excellent, and I agree with other reviews, Billy Gray was great for the part of Bud. I have not seen another character like him on any program. He was unique.

I agree with the other reviewer. I'd like to see an interview with Billy Gray to be added to these season sets.
His great acting and comedy certainly added to all of these episodes of Father Knows Best.

Great Days of TV,

I am so happy to find these great TV shows of the past, or more accurately of my childhood days. This show was a favorite of mine and I can remember getting everything done on time so that I could watch it before bedtime. The premise of the father being the head of the home is lost in today's culture. This show would not be able to make it in today's market - not even on TV Land, etc. any more. How sad! Today's children often do not know what a secure family situation is all about and these shows give an example to strive for and entertain at the same time. Being the same age as Kathy, I always paid the most attention to her and what she did and her home seemed like a mansion to me. I trust that people will continue to buy and request shows from the past like this series.

This series is the best!! I have watched all 33 episodes and, the thing about the show is that it is both funny at times and very emotional too. I got teary eyed many times.
Wish so much there could be a way to be transfered into the show because life is so good at the Anderson's and you just wanna be a part of the family! Shout Factory is so wonderful to be putting this fantastic TV series to DVD and I can't wait for them to release Season's 5 and 6!!!!!!

Series Four continues to be great viewing with excellent storylines all well acted by the cast who continue to work effortlessly with each other. Betty, the eldest daughter evolves into a real obnoxious self obsessive bitch. Jim and Margaret seem to hope that she'll grow out it but instead of improving her personality is getting steadily worse. She is still dragging around her handbag boyfriend Ralph whilst going out with just about every other boy in Springfield. She is revolting to her cousin Milly. If she were my daughter - I'd be so ashamed ! It's fascinating though to watch, there is a lot of psychological sub text to Betty that is played very close to the surface - Elinor Donahue does well. I wonder, is Ralph really a closet Gay and Betty consequently sexually frustrated ? Bud is growing up but still has no brains in the romance department either. Bring on the next series and by the way - How many series are there ?

I just received season 4 of this classic show...I have watched several episodes of this season, and I believe each season gets better and better...the combination of comedy, drama and stirring of the emotions is perfect...the cast (and director) does such an outstanding job, and were perfectly selected for this show...those who watch will have their favorite episodes and see why this show, although now 50 years since the last new episode, should be included in any discussion of the best in television history...bring on seasons 5 and 6
