From the Author

Obviously, 'Father Like A Tree' was my first book. And, it literally poured out of me during a time, I now realize, that was the most significant personal and professional crossroads of my life.

My family and I had just relocated to a small town not far from New York City. I had recently left a successful career in executive management, and my wife of 11-years was pregnant with our third child. One night, as I tucked-in my then four-year old daughter, she asked me, "Daddy, will you tell me a story?" Then, she added, "But, I want a story I've never heard before." The story I told her was 'Father Like A Tree.'

What I didn't know on that winter night in 2004 was the fact that my wife, Lori, had an advanced stage of an occult cancer, which was almost accidentally diagnosed less than a month later.

Even as my wife underwent treatment for the disease, I told the story of the beautiful bird and her three baby birds, by request, each night as I put my daughters to bed. A chance meeting with an obstetric nurse whose husband was the accomplished illustrator, Tom Hedderich, was the last piece I needed to move forward with the publication of that story I'd first told to my little girl that night.

In June of 2004, Lori gave birth to a healthy son, but she succumbed to her illness in February of the next year. 'Father Like A Tree' was released on Father's Day 2005. The dedication reads, "For Lori."

From the Inside Flap

On a spring day, a beautiful bird lands on the branch of a tree and decides to make it her home. She builds a nest and lays three eggs. Eventually, the beautiful bird hears the sound of pecking from inside the eggs. Three perfect and beautiful baby birds emerge into a world of leaves and branches. As the baby birds grow, the beautiful bird reveals important lessons about life, love, family, relationships, and perhaps much more.

Delightfully written by Matthew S. Field and breathtakingly illustrated by Tom Hedderich, 'Father Like A Tree' is a real-life fairytale that will be enjoyed and appreciated by young and old alike.

More About the Author

In addition to his first novel, 'The Dream Seeker,' Matthew S. Field has written two illustrated children's books, 'Father Like A Tree' (2005) and 'The Three Pigs, Business School, and Wolfe Hash Stew' (2010).

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Field is a graduate of the University of Missouri where he earned a writing-intensive Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Later, he completed a Master of Business Administration program at Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania.

After a successful management career, Field moved with his wife and two daughters to Warwick, New York. Shortly after settling into their new home, Field received two life-changing pieces of news: the couple was expecting their third child and Field's wife had been diagnosed with cancer. It was during this time that Field directed his professional energies toward writing.

On June 19, 2004, the couple welcomed a son. Exactly one year later, 'Father Like A Tree' was published. Unfortunately, Field's wife succumbed to her illness in February of 2005 and did not see the completed work.

Although today Field occasionally consults and contracts for the business community, he is primarily a full-time stay-at-home dad for his three children. Currently, Field is working on a non-fiction, journalistic narrative about the 1971 murder of storekeeper in a north St. Louis, Missouri neighborhood.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Achievement in Children's Literature, September 30, 2005
This review is from: Father Like A Tree (Hardcover)
With "Father Like A Tree," Matthew S. Field (who is this guy?) has made some remarkable accomplishments in the form of this illustrated children's book. Children love the story, the rhythm, and the extraordinary illustrations. (No kidding. The illustrations are AMAZING.) Parents who read the story to their children or just to themselves will find it difficult not to finish without a tear in their eye.

While "Father..." is truly the biography of every loving father and mother, Field achieves through subtle metaphor commentary of the social, economic, and even spiritual aspects of life and parenthood. Told from the perspective of (a father like) a tree, a beautiful bird lands on the branch of a tree and decides to make the tree her home. From the very start, Field conveys exactly what it means to be a father whose "roots reach deep...trunk (is) thick and strong...branches reach lovingly out..." At the same time, Field comments on, and suggests the beauty and necessity of social diversity, "I live in a forest with trees of every shape, color, and size." He also ambiguously refers to - get this - a healthy, capitalistic economy, "I breath in what the animals in the forest breath out. I breath out what the animals in the forest breath in."

Obviously, these are references that the average 4- to 8-year old will not grasp, but that is the uniqueness of "Father..." The story of three baby birds hatching, learning to fly, and growing up (much too quickly) under the watchful, supportive, and loving eye of their mother, the beautiful bird is irresistable to the elementary school-age audience. The recurring themes of the baby birds holding their mouths "wide open" for food and both the beautiful bird and young birds pecking at the ground, "Peck. Peck. Peck. Peck. Peck...," interests the child reader/listener in a meaningful way.

Finally, (without giving up the amazing ending which often results in the question from a little voice, "Mommy or Daddy, why are you crying?), Field provides the reader with an unobtrusive picture - and a picture is exactly what it is - of heaven, or at least the author's conception of heaven.

It's rare although not completely without precedent that a children's book engages adult and children as much as "Father..." does. It is equally rare that the complementary artwork and quality of the book itself equal the depth and breadth of the words. Quite an achievement and a book that should be on every child's bookshelf...and their parents' bookshelf, too!

I had the privilege of interviewing Matthew Field on the radio. He is a wonderful person and his book is amazing. It is a simple story of parental love that is beautifully illustrated. If you have young children, please buy this book and share it often with them!
