5.0 out of 5 stars The Poignant Truth
No fairytale this, but an honest sharing of the realities that tested this father-son relationship from the perspectives of each. A tribute to the strength of love.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not his usual style
An avid Walter Wangerin fan, I found this book had a clumsy style, unlike previous books that transported me into new places. Was it too close, too personal a subject for him to write about? Sometimes the language was so convoluted and jumpy I had to re-read it several times, or just move on. His pain leapt off the page as he seemed to struggle to find words to describe...

This review is from: Father and Son: Finding Freedom (Hardcover)
This book deals with the problems of teen rebellion and questions of adopted children. The book is unique in that you hear the father's side of the story, and then toward the end of the book, you hear the narrative from the troubled son. The style of the author was a bit bothersome to the story line. He loves parentheses, and sticks ramdom phrases in the middle of sentences, so that you must re-read to catch the meaning. it seemed to skip back and forth a bit between time periods. But overall i thought it was a good product for anyone who thinks, "where did i go wrong with this child?" Even in the best of homes, kids can be unhappy and they can rebel. Also, it shows that in the end, the child did emerge from his rebellion, and you hear what was going on in his head at that time.
Book would profit from being edited and streamlined a bit, but i would still recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching Story, June 6, 2008
This review is from: Father and Son: Finding Freedom (Hardcover)
This is a deeply emotional book about broken lives and redemption. Reading the brutally honest story of this father and son team touched my heart. If you have a rocky relationship in your life that you don't think can ever be made right, this book will give you hope.

This is a very religous author that could have remained in the clergy. A wounder person to read and meet.

What I liked was the insight into the author's life. Its easy to imagine authors just sit and write all day. This book revealed all the hats Wangerin wears - husband, father, pastor, activist... and at times writer of great books.
