Hope Carter has had a bad night. After a trying time at work she is standing outside her office, waiting for her friend, Steve, to come out when she sees a dog enter an alleyway. As a veterinarian she decides to go after him, only to find four dogs, and then four men attacking a woman further in. After being chased and attacked by one of the men, she is rescued by the appearance of Steve. But, now she is not sure what she saw. Where they dogs or men...or both?

Athair has had a bad century. After a vicious betrayal and subsequent massacre of the Eagle Clan, he and his brothers have retreated into isolation from the world along with the children they were able to save, raising them as their own. But now it is time for them to intermingle again, as they are in need of mates. Athair sets out with Rath and Dàn, a powerful seer, to find the Bear Clan in an attempt to open up communication. When one of Dàn's prophesies comes true and they are attacked, Athair flees, following Dàn's words to find hope. What he finds is protection in an unlikely source...with Hope.

Hope has been hurt in the past. Fifteen years ago, she lost her entire family in a horrible car accident where she was the only survivor. She should have lost her life, but instead Hope has been left with deep scars, both inside and out. It has left her with the need to help others, augmented by her natural empathic abilities. When Steve hits Athair while in wolf form with his car, Hope is determined to help the wolf. When she discovers that her wolf can speak to her telepathically, in the sexiest voice she has ever heard, Hope realizes that werewolves, or Valàfrn as Athair calls himself, do exist.

When the men who attacked Athair come after him again, Hope and Athair need to perform a ceremony, to try to call him back to human form. Hope can't understand the connection between the two of them--a connection that is growing stronger. When they face a danger from the other clan, Hope must come to terms with who she really is, and she must face the fact that only with Athair beside her will she be whole. Athair realizes that Hope is his mate and now that he has her, he won't let anyone harm her again.

The Eagle Clan series is peppered with so many fascinating characters that it is easy to get lost within the pages, ignoring the real world outside of Father of the Wolf. L. Shannon is a master at creating a mythical world and making it seem realistic; I almost expected to turn a corner and find my own shifter waiting for me. Father of the Wolf is an incredible story, and Athair and Hope fit each other perfectly. I can't wait to read more about the fascinating and incredibly appealing Valàfrn men, and I can't wait to read the next in this promising series!!
