Book Description

In Fatherhood, beloved NBA player, poet, children’s advocate, and devoted dad Etan Thomas speaks from his heart on what matters most in his life: being there for his children. As a leading participant in President Obama’s Fatherhood Initiative, Etan has reached out to young men (often young fathers) in the juvenile detention system and in local communities. He knows firsthand the difference having a father in your life every day can make.

Now he brings together a chorus of voices to weigh in on the importance of being a father in our nation today and to share what they’ve learned from being a father, having a father, or in some cases not having a father around.

With Original Essays and Poems from

Review

Praise for Fatherhood

“This inspirational meditation on fatherhood from former Washington Wizards forward Etan Thomas offers a lot to chew on, both as a primer for thoughtful fathers and children and as a particularly trenchant entry in the ongoing conversation on parenthood and race…Any book that brings the words of Howard Dean and Yao Ming between the same covers is noteworthy.…A tricky line to walk—balancing street cred with idealism, anger with acceptance—but for the most part [Thomas] pulls it off with aplomb. Fathers of any skin color would do well to emulate him.”—The Washington Post

“An insightful book.”—Publishers Weekly

"Etan Thomas not only has skills on the basketball court but more importantly with words and ideas."—Spike Lee

"I would like to salute Etan Thomas. He is a warrior, doing mighty work."—Cornel West

“[Thomas is] a defender of fatherhood.”—New York Daily News

“Really, really moving.” —Soledad O’Brien, CNN

“Etan extends his reach beyond the NBA to helping youth and families throughout America.”—FOX News

“This book is beneficial for fathers, mentors, and sons, no matter how well or how poorly they’re performing in those roles.”—The Washington Times

“Etan Thomas displays his skills off the court pulling together an intimate collection of powerful voices who open up on ending the pain of fatherlessness, the pride and power of being a father, and the promise of a new generation of strong dads”—Essence

“This inspirational book is a call to action, sharing and emphasizing the importance of being present as fathers.”—Daytona Beach News-Journal

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read about the importance of Fathers! March 6, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Etan Thomas has put together an amazing collection of quotes about fatherhood from well-known men in our society. He intersperses the quotes with his own well-articulated perspectives and experiences, covering all the highs, the lows, and above all, the joys and importance of being the father we are meant and needed to be to our children. As a counselor putting together a curriculum for a 12-lesson course for young fathers, I am using this book extensively to stir pertinent discussions and reflections. From a "Father's Creed" I recently wrote: "My children only have one father, and that's me. They know and feel this more deeply than I can ever imagine or understand." Etan Thomas' book explains, elaborates, and encourages this truth in many and varied ways. Must reading for dads, especially who grew up with a dad who was absent or only minimally present in their childhood.

There are a lot of different perspective about what it means to be a father. He has interviewed some of the most famous men in the U.S. and they all have something unique to offer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terror-supporting fatherhood "expert" July 21, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Etan Thomas is a political extremist who doesn't really care about children - at least not all children. As I write these words, his Twitter feed is filled with a steady stream of Palestinian propaganda and he repeatedly uses the "#FreePalestine" hashtag. He demonizes Israel and dehumanizes Israelis and Israeli children, while completing ignoring atrocities committed by Hamas, a violent terror organization. "FreePalestine" is a slogan among radical Islamic extremists for destroying the state of Israel (Hamas' charter calls for the violent occupation of all of "Palestine," aka all of Israel).

Hamas sends its own children to blow themselves (and others) to smithereens, but apparently this isn't a problem for the fatherhood "expert." Buy this book if you want to support an extremist who cares about children (if he agrees with the political ideology of their respective governments).

This was one of the most inspiring books on fatherhood I have ever read. This a true picture of the need for fathers in our challenging world today. Mr. Thomas was inspiring and at the same time did not pull any punches when it come to the difficulties our children face when fathers do not tale there responsibilities seriously. I not on recommend this book to all fathers , I purchased three dozen books to give away to fathers that need to read this book
