This collection of poems, homilies, and essays explores a wide range of topics such as the love and tension between fathers and sons, the lingering pain of racism, self-destructive tendencies, and the redemptive power of God. 5.0 out of 5 stars Strong Men, Tender Hearts, October 19, 2009
This review is from: Father's Day (Paperback)
Father's Day is a glimpse into the souls of two strong and amazing African American men who happen to be father and son. They explore issues of universal concern, such as love between a parent and child, the nasty stench of racism, and even weightier topics like suicide, through their poetry and essays. In the process, the writers subtly remind us of our power to transform our lives. Sheer pleasure!

This review is from: Father's Day (Paperback)
A baby boomer father and his generation X son converse with each other through their poetry, essays, and sermonettes. Anthologized in Father's Day, their pennings are filled with epiphanies and teachable moments experienced by each of the authors as Blackamerican males as they strove to achieve manhood in a nation where racism has been institutionalized. With gentle humor undergirded by Christian morality, the father's and son's writings explore such topics as male-female relationships, parenting, grandparenting, domestic violence, school dropouts, drive-by shootings, rural and urban life and incarceration and the prison system. Many of the entries are prefaced by contemporary insights and interpretations of Old and New Testament stories.

Formatted for easy readability, the soft-back compilation of 149 pages in Father's Day makes it a great recreational read, as well as a valuable resource for adults and youth interested in mentoring and/or facilitating intergenerational and interracial dialogues settings such as prisons, churches, YMCA's, libraries and other agencies concerned with dismantling institutionalized racism and heightening awareness of past and present-day disparities and inequities in American society.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise, September 27, 2009
This review is from: Father's Day (Paperback)
This book is a great read. It gives insight into the world of Fatherhood. The poetry is smooth and expressive. I felt closer to my own Dad just by reading the stories. I think readers will be surprised and pleased with this book. Buy more than one. You'll want to share with someone close to you. I'm sending it to my son who is about to be a first time Dad.
