4.0 out of 5 stars Quite Funny
This movie really is pretty funny. Crystal is always funny and Williams, well, what can I say... the guy is funny even if he's not trying to be! Crystal plays a straight-laced lawyer while Williams plays a total psychotic, who really wants to believe he has a son so he'll have a reason to stay partially sane.

This movie's plot may be a bit thin, but who cares because...

3.0 out of 5 stars Father's Day Review
The movie is entertaining and a good way to spend about two hours. Robin Williams predictable. This was not one of his better performances. Billy Crystal's performance was outstanding. I would not recommend this film for anyone under 15. There are some serious adult issues in it. It can be a bit heavy for younger viewers.

This movie's plot may be a bit thin, but who cares because the cast is great. The short version of the plot is that a worried mother recruits two men to find her runaway teenage son. How does she get them to agree to find him? She tells each of the men(obviously not thinking that they may run into each other while searching for the boy) that he is the father. This leads to a silly comic pairing.

There are all kinds of great things in this movie. Crystal and Williams are great together. Mel Gibson makes a cameo-- watch closely because you might not recognize him!! The band Sugar Ray is also in the movie. Cool things like that!

This may not satisfy a hunger for laugh out loud, slap on the knee kind of funny, but it's still funny, with a charming ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't stop laughing., April 26, 1999

FUNNY! Williams and Crystal are great together, as always. Their cross-country chase to find their 'son' is hilarious. Look for a funny cameo by Mel Gibson as the 'pierced' guy. One more thing to add... Don't miss out on seeing the original French version, LES COMPRERES, with Girard Depardeau... Equally hilarious.

1.0 out of 5 stars A dream team that turns out to be a snoozer, December 28, 2006

FATHER'S DAY writers Lowell Ganz and Bobaloo Mandel wrote great film comedies such as SPLASH, CITY SLICKERS, PARENTHOOD and A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN. And FATHER'S DAY director Ivan Reitman made gems such as STRIPES, GHOST BUSTERS and TWINS. With zany Robin Williams and Billy Crystal in lead roles, how could FATHER'S DAY turn out to be so dull - and not even interesting? I don't know, but the story seems little more than a bunch of ideas for a film thrown together, as if there was not enough time to iron out the script before shooting the movie.

Oddly, the athletic Robin Williams plays the softy while the runt Billy Crystal is someting of a tough guy in FATHER'S DAY. It's hard to believe and, more to the point, not funny. About the only refreshing aspect of the film is Nastassja Kinski, whom I had not seen in a film in more than ten years. Not that Kinski has much to do in FATHER'S DAY, but her brief, wasted presence is the movie's sole redeeming feature.

It was funny...but not so funny, williams has done better, and the story is not so exciting. But I can give it 3.5 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Best actors but script doesn't do justice., March 31, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Father's Day (DVD)
Overall, I have always enjoyed Robin William and Billy Crystal's performance in many other movies, but I must admit to my surprise that it wasn't making me laughing on the floor as I usually do. The script was boring and the plot was downright disppointing. Didn't like the ending. It was like a stupid wild goose chase for both of them and end up accepting that the mother of the son lied to them. Which is really a bad example for younger audience to see this and thinking it's normal for mothers to lie. I hope someday to see both Robin and Billy to act together in another movie in the near future and hopefully better script than this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Modestly Amusing Film from Top Talents, January 31, 2012
By

This review is from: Father's Day (DVD)
The film is amusing, in some places funny, but, mostly, it does not give two top comedy stars much to work with. Williams is made to seems to be sodden in performing a range of physical and verbal comic expressions; there appears to be a forced character to his behavior. Crystal handles the straight parts of his role adeptly but the hoped for comedy bits rarely hit the mark. In other words, a sound premise for a plot was not carried out in the plot itself. In sum, it is an enjoyable film which should be worth the time you put in watching, but it is not Robin Williams or Billy Crystal as they can be when working with better material.

3.0 out of 5 stars Father's Day, July 31, 2010

Not a great movie. Williams is his usual weird persona. Crystal is convincing. Best part of movie for me was the small role played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. In a serious mode she is totally convincing...plus she is gorgeous to look at...a real beautiful girl! I would love to see her get a dramatic role as I think she could really surprise a lot of people. Hey, Clint Eastwood! Check this girl out for your next off-beat film.
