This book has a great idea. It's kind of like a journal into the mind of the father through his own words. I know that I sometimes have a hard time telling about myself and this book would help do that. HOWEVER, I do NOT recommend this book to anyone other than a Christian. I am a Deist and was a little upset to find it asking questions like "When did you become a Christian? How did your life change?" The other things are much better. For example: "Recall for me five of the most important lessons you have learned in life." THAT'S something profound and perfect to teach your children no matter who you are. All in all this isn't a bad book. It's has great stuff, but it has a lot of questions that non-Christians just aren't going to be interested in or will be disappointed with. Ultimately I think this would be fantastic if they kept this one, but also did others for non-theists and non-Christians.

I was disappointed in the nelson books paperback version of this book. It is only 5 1/4 by 5 1/4 inches. That amount of page space does not give much room to respond to the questions and truly write a life story. My husband has an 8 1/2 by 5 1/4 size book which he has really enjoyed writing in and I had purchased these to give to our sons. I will find the regular book size for them, these are too small.

I bought this book for my husband, and we just got it yesterday. At first he didnt even want to be bothered with the book, wouldnt even open it. But as a good wife I am, I nagged and nagged some more lol, finally he opened it up. Well, he never let it down until he had got to the last page of the book. I think I might have even saw a tear falling down his face. :) This is going to be a wonderful book for our daughters! After we are gone, this book will give our daughters a chance to really know things about their father. I just wish I had bought more. Oh wait, I think I will now! Why don't you too? aloha

A Father's Legacy: Your Life Story in Your Own Words

This book is a great gift for Fathers. Nice size, and lots of questions to jog your mind about your life and passing on things about yourself to your children. You can pick it up and complete a page or two at a time. Nice gift that can be completed and read to your children while you're still alive or by them after you die.

If you buy it for an elderly father, you could ask him questions out of the book and do the writing yourself. Great gift that keeps on giving.

The book has a spiral binding, so it's easy to keep open while you're writing in it. Also, there are so many questions that if any are too uncomfortable to answer or hard to remember at the time, you can just move on to another one.

I bought 3 copies of this book (one for my father, one for each of my grandfathers) as well as the counterpart for women, and they are wonderful, brilliant, lovely books and I will never, ever be sorry that I bought them.

The book is chock full of questions that are priceless and heartwarming about your upbringing, ranging from "what was the decor in your bedroom" to "what was your first kiss like". These are things that the vast majority of people would never think to ask or answer without prompting, but they paint such an amazingly more intimate picture of your life.

The only two minor objections I have to this book are the overt Protestant angle to the book ("when did you get saved", for example, being a completely inappropriate question for any Catholics, Muslims, Jews, Hindus or anyone else who would benefit from the book otherwise), and the repetition of some of the questions specifically relating to secondary and post-secondary education.

It is, however, a brilliant, lovely book. My paternal grandfather returned his and made copies for all of his children and we treasure it, and I just the one back from my maternal grandfather and intend on making copies for my uncles and cousins.

I had bought the previous version for my father but it got misplaced. I ordered this one as a replacement. In the older version, questions about my mom were referenced as "mom." For example "Where did you meet mom?" In the new version, "mom" is instead referenced as "your wife." For example, "Where did you meet your wife?" I found the new language creepy and kind of repulsive. Even if my parents were divorced (they're not) I'd be interested in the person who gave birth to me, not his current wife. Hopefully I'll be able to track down an earlier copy of the book. The concept of this book is wonderful, but the execution of this version isn't.

A family friend gave me this book for Christmas. I am almost done with January and have thoroughly enjoyed it thus far. I read several of the entries to my wife over the weekend and each entry turned into a neat discussion starter. We have a three year old daughter and a 3 month old boy. When I was a child I begged my dad to tell me stories of his youth, so I am sure this book will be a family favorite in a few years. I actually logged on Amazon to buy it for my dad and grandfather and thought I'd tap out a review while I was here.

As I said, I've only completed the month of January but I can tell you it does ask numerous questions about spirituality. Were you sprinkled or baptized; when were you saved; do you remember how you prayed as a child; etc. These are great questions for me since I'm a second generation Protestant. However, someone who is unchurched or of a different religious persuasion might find some of the questions unanswerable.

I never knew a book like this existed until about a month ago, but now I'm convinced this journal, or one like it, should be a mandatory part of fatherhood.
