I think it takes a lot of finesse to pull off a book where one partner blatantly commits adultery but the two manage to heal the relationship. I don't think Carolyn McSparren achieves that in this book. The heroine was devastated when her husband made another woman pregnant and left her to raise his new family. Although she continued working and living, the heroine never achieved her own dreams to have a family, even at the end. Instead she settles for a man who claimed he cheated because she was "too perfect".

This book left me empty and unsettled. I would have liked to have read a book where either a cheating hero redeems himself in some way, heals the heroine in some way, OR where the heroine overcomes such a devastating emotional injury and goes on to build a satisfying life. That never happens in this story.

When writing a cheating hero the author needs to be able to redeem said hero in the eyes of the reader. I don't believe that was completely achieved in this instance. Kate told him flat out the only unforgiveable sin in her book is cheating. She said this before they even married and yet he cheated. His excuse is flimsy at best and makes you wonder if he would do it again. Maybe one would believe him more if he had fought harder from the onset. Like right after she found out instead of tucking his tale and running away to marry the other woman. Her mother is a total piece of work. She thinks she concealed her pain from her daughter and both parents being there for Kate, was better even though Kate's father continually cheated on her mother. Obviously not because Kate saw and carried the baggage into her adulthood because of it. The mystery of the story is very good. It's well written and except for the fact that David waits so long to contact Kate, whom he could have attempted to contact 4-5 years after their divorce and force things, perhaps not even married Melba and forced things with Kate, it would have been a five star book!

Two decades ago, David Canfield hurt his beloved spouse, Kate, by having an affair and ultimately siring a child with another woman. Unable to cope with his betrayal, Kate left him. David went on to raise his son Jason. Meanwhile, Kate married Alec Mulholland and became a high powered Atlanta-based attorney. Last year, Alec passed away.

Now the police have arrested Jason, charging him with killing his high school girl friend. David wants his son to be represented by the best available lawyer, which happens to be Kate. Without being egotistical, Kate knows she is the right person for this case. However, she never lost her feelings of love or hurt when it comes to David. Can she properly represent his son when she still loves her betrayer?

FATHERS AND SONS is an interesting blending of a relationship drama within a second chance at love story line. The story line is fun, especially the interactions between the three lead players. The characters seem real and motivated, leaving readers believe in the impact of the big hurt. Carolyn McSparren demonstrates she knows how to spin a truly entertaining category romance.
