5.0 out of 5 stars In Memoriam..., July 6, 2008
By
Tanari (Washington) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fathom Volume 2: Into The Deep (Paperback)
This--and all other--Fathom products take on a whole new meaning, now that Michael Turner has died. His genius, his talent, is gone forever. And all we have left to celebrate such epic gifts is his body of work...And that's far too meager, he should have had another 30 years, at least. He was only 37.

I'm sure I felt as many of his other fans did: impatient with his slim output in the last few years. I figured this largely had to do with the pressures of starting his own comic book company, Aspen. I didn't realize he had terminal cancer.

This purchase is worth every cent: not only is it a masterpiece of creativity drafted by a young artist at the height of his talents, it is also a memorial to that talent, lost too soon.

We'll all miss you, Michael. You were a role-model and an inspiration to an entire generation of young artists. And my heart goes out to his friends and family. Truly, this is a tragic loss for the entire community.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not like Fathom vol. 1, August 12, 2009

This review is from: Fathom Volume 2: Into The Deep (Paperback)
i read the first volume about 4 years ago and it blew my mind. I absolutely loved the sketch style by Michael Turner and i loved the heavy, fluid ink by Joe Weems and Jonathan Smith's atmospheric coloring really brought out the images. the story was fresh and original and personable.

i am about half way through this volume, the various art covers are awesome because they were drawn up the master himself. However, the team is not the same and doesn't hold a candle to Michael Turner's hand. The sketches by Koi Turnbull are decent, but more juvenile and less interesting. The ink technique by Sal Regla and Jason Gorder are common and bland. The coloring by Christina Strain and Paul Mounts is bland, uninteresting, and lackluster. I make a BIG point about the art quality because the art is like 2/3 of a "GOOD" comic book and the other third is the writing.

The story picks up right after fathom vol. 1 and Dawn of War (which i have not read) and is written pretty well. But it keeps referencing its predecessors so if you didn't read one of them you're are going to feel a little lost in some of the conversations, like i did.

Being that i am only half way through the comic book, and am writing this review now and i am a HUGE fan of Michael Turner, am i giving this a 3/5 stars. I feel that Turner's writing alone is not enough to give an honest 4 or 5/5 stars. The tag team trio of Turner, Weems, and Smith makes for an unbelievable comic book and enthralling story and would have MADE the second volume for me. This volume is just enough story for me though to still be glad that i ordered it. I recommend the volume to die hard Michael Turner fans.
