5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite albums, February 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Fathom (Audio CD)
First of all, I must warn you. THIS IS NOT INDUSTRIAL!! It is as Mortal themselves call it-- alternative hyper-soul. While this term is quite ambiguous, there is no other way to describe it. These guys are an example of post-modern rock. They can be viewed in the same light as NIN, even though they're music is nothing alike. You see, both are viewed as being the saviour of something they don't even claim to be apart...Industrial music. Certainly many songs, like "Alive & Awake", "Promulgate", and "Godspeed" ALLUDE to a more industrial flavor. However, songs like "Bright Wing" and "Jil Sent Me" are very much pop tunes. At any rate, regardless of what this album could possibly be classified as, it is very innovative. Slashy guitars, distorted screams, and heavy grooves all make for a very interesting ride. This album, were it remixed today, could be HEAVY, HEAVY, HEAVY. The lyrics are very poetic and deep. I love them as much as I love the music. In closing, I want you to realize that classifying this album as "Industrial" would be doing it a great injustice. It is what it is. Get it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best Christian heavy industrial I've heard., November 30, 1998

The best CD by Mortal. It has all around good songs. The heavy industrial is great and the CD has an unusual variety of sounds. One of the best Christian CD's you can buy if you like industrial or hardcore.

5.0 out of 5 stars SOME KIND OF AWESOME, December 16, 2008
This review is from: Fathom (Audio CD)
I have loved this album since I first heard it in 1993. I simply love the music and wish there is more of it. Sadly the band seemed to depart from the style in this album in a big way. Still, I have been listening to this album, off and on, for the past fifteen years and I am still listening to it. I highly recommend anyone and everyone to get a hold of this music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mortal's finest hour, October 24, 2010
This review is from: Fathom (Audio CD)
I'm the furthest thing from a Christian, but I don't care if you write music about Jesus or Satan or agnosticism - just make me feel something. This is a great industrial rock album with inventive loops, samples, and nice melodies. There's some great energy, and the lyrics aren't half bad either. They never again made anything like it. This is their peak.

5.0 out of 5 stars "this album is a must for anyone who is 'alive and awake!'", November 16, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Fathom (Audio CD)
the album "fathom" by the group mortal is groundbreaking in the music world, using deeply inspiring and poetic lyrics sung and spoken in a wall of sound that touches on hip hop, rock, and even classical but yet is industrial on the cutting edge. songs like "alive and awake" "rift" "jil sent me" bright wings" and "Godspeed" make the album truly original with infectious grooves that make it hard not to vibe to. joshua drowning
