Fatigue in cancer patients has a major impact on decision making, on health-related quality of life and on numerous symptom scales. The clinician should know how to grade fatigue, recognise its main causes, and be able to design a therapeutic approach, whether to reduce the causes of fatigue or introduce specific measures to treat it. Specific grading tools have been defined and validated, and some knowledge of the complex mechanisms of fatigue has been acquired. This has led to the recognition of the incidence of fatigue in cancer patients and its impact on their lives, and to the definition of fatigue-orientated treatement strategies. All of these issues formed the basis of a course organized by the European School of Oncology (ESO), at which international experts shared their experiences, concerns and opinions.
