EXCELLENT CD BY A SINGER THAT STRANGELY CHANGED MY LIFE.,
This review is from: Fats Domino - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I have five or six CDs featuring Fats Domino. The CD being reviewed here is one that I happened to have in the car with me the other day and as I played it I enjoyed a series of flashbacks. Music does that for me as with many. Certain songs, various artists; they all bring either general, or more often than not, specific memories from the past. Fats Domino has always been a favorite of mine and was one of those wonderful individuals of that era that introduced me to, and hooked me on rock and roll. I still listen to a lot of this sort of music as a certified geezer and received much pleasure from doing so.Fats Domino though holds a particular place in my memory bank. He and his band presented the first live concert my wife and I had ever attended. This was back in the late 1950s. I must have been around sixteen years old as I remember I had recently received my driver's license and a few days before the concert had received my first moving violation ticket...drag racing. Anyway, a friend somehow purchased tickets for a Fats Domino concert. It was in the middle of August and the concert was held in a small town in Northern Arkansas, about 35miles from our home. I was dating my future wife at that time and she and I, along with three other couples and an extra girl, all packed into my friends old black Ford; a car that comfortably held three and a half people, and headed out down those very twisty two lane roads. That old Ford could hit 50 miles per hour top end when it felt like running and we actually made it to the concert site. The show was staged in a very small theater in a small town. The theater was meant to hold 250 seated people but by the time everyone got in there were well over 900 plus packed into the place. There was no air conditioning, little ventilation and the acoustics were terrible. Smoking was allowed. The entire theater reeked of cigarette smoke, sweaty teenage bodies, Old Spice and Aqua Velva. None of my friends, including myself smoked so you can imagine the shock to our senses. In about an hour; 7:00 p.m. to be exact, Fats and his band walked onto the small wooden stage that held a piano and two low tech speakers. The band consisted of Fats at the piano, a drummer, a saxophone player and a guitarist. That was it. Those four men started playing. They played one song after the other. There were no breaks between songs. They played for four and one half hours non stop. Fats and the other members of his band were drenched is sweat...they were soaking wet. Of course so were we the audience. This was by far the best and most intense concert I have ever attended in my life and trust me, since that time I have been to more than my share of them all over the country; concerts of every genre you can imagine. But that's not all folks...no, no, no! This concert was literally a life changing event for me. Several things should be noted. When we were at the concert we noted that other than Fats and the band there was not one black face in the theater. It was illegal for blacks and white in that town to mingle in public places...that included churches, et al. This, at the time had little effect. It was against the law in the county we lived in back in Missouri for black to be present after dark. This law was enforced rather strictly. We had no black in our local area so seeing all white faces was not that extraordinary. We were all aware of the Jim Crow laws of the time but none of us had ever at that point in our lives really thought about them. We were absolutely clueless. Anyway, on the trip back home we were talking about the concert, how great it was and babbling on like teens always have and always will do, when one of my friends mentioned that he had spoken to one of the band members and had found that Fats and his crew, once they had packed up, had to drive all the way to Little Rock in order to find a place that would allow them to stay. This was a four hour trip in the dead of night through the Boston Mountains and they had a show elsewhere the next night. There was dead silence in the car for a few moments. Then suddenly another friend of mine, Mike I will call him, made one of the most profound statements I have ever heard in my life. It was a statement that has stuck with me all these years. It was a statement that absolutely changed my life. Now keep in mind that Mike was NOT a mental giant. No, far, far from it. As an example; Mike played left tackle on our football team. I played right guard. We played together for four years. There was not one game we played in during that entire time that once the quarterback had given the play and the snap, that Mike did not ask me on the way to the line, "Who do I hit Donnie, who do I hit?" I always told him and he always hit who he was suppose to hit. Anyway, this young lad of 16 who was not overly bright suddenly said, "Hey man, that s*** ain't right!" Wham! It was like I was hit with a bolt of lightning. I had what could be called an epiphany. I felt sick to my stomach and suddenly felt a burning rage. We won't go into it here, but this single and simple statement sent me down some very strange and twisted paths; paths I am still following to this very day. Yup, it changed my life and hopefully, the lives of some others. (Mike, by the way, went off to play ball at a small college. He became a very successful businessman owning two mega salvage yards and became a driving force in our local beef industry. I talked to him a couple of months ago, as I do every so often, and found that that slow thinking kid has turned into a very wise old man...go figure. I had always figured he would drown in his own spit from forgetting to swallow.) Anyway, this is a good CD. The sound quality is quite adequate, the selection of songs, while small, is perfect for short trips. I am glad I have this one in my collection. Don Blankenship The Ozarks
