The Joint is REALLY Jumpin'!, April 26, 2003
This review is from: Fats Waller: Golden Greats (Audio CD)
This is an excellent 3-CD set at a super, super price. Fats Waller's skill as a stride pianist was unparalleled, and he really shines on this collection, with the help of some very able musicians, including the irrepressible Herman Autrey, whose soaring trumpet is the perfect complement to Waller's nimble playing. The group totally tears up Twelfth Street Rag and Why Do I Lie to Myself About You, and their joy in playing is so infectious that it will surely bring a smile to your face (I know it does to mine). Waller, who eschewed sentimentality in his music, and became a very funny man while doing so, nonetheless releases lots of emotion with a straight version of Tell Me With Your Kisses; the gorgeous notes cascading from his piano on this tune are nothing short of astounding. A great talent and a great character who lived large and died too young, Fats Waller left us a legacy of wonderful music, and much of it is right here in this collection for all to enjoy.

Just About Right, January 22, 2012
This review is from: Fats Waller: Golden Greats (Audio CD)
I love Fats Waller and looking through his albums I thought this looked like the best mix of affordability and quality. And really 74 tracks is about right. I did supplement this with some songs I love like "Little Curly Hair in a High Chair", one of my favorite songs ever- sung to a toddler throwing her food as if by a waiter. I threw the other songs on some CDs I made myself. But many of his best tunes are here. But getting the complete works is probably excessive as he manages to be both really eclectic and a tad one-note all at once, if that does not confuse you, and you will be piling up a lot of different versions of several songs. I mean he's fun, but after an hour, you just want someone to let a cornet player cornet it up without encouragement ("blow boy, blow it, oh yeah, do your stuff!", etc). Great party music though. People will stop every now and again and ask, "Who IS this?" The first disc is the best with a whole jukebox of stand out songs. The third dwindles a little. Some of the newer sets such as the wonderfully titled "If You Got to Ask, Then You Aint Got it" sounded too cleaned up for me, with a lot of the depth of the music taken out with the static. I like the softer, older sound anyway, sometimes.
