Book Description

Small towns, long memories. Everyone in the exclusive summer resort of James Bay, Michigan remembers FATTY PATTY, the chubby little girl with the round face and wild red curls. All grown up now, Patty Perreault teaches at the same elementary school where the painful playground memories still taunt her. She hasn’t forgotten the cruel nickname—plus she still hasn’t lost those extra pounds. Convinced her weight is the biggest reason why she’s a four time loser in the semi-finals for Teacher of the Year, Patty resolves to make some changes in her body and her life.

Sam Curtis, an overweight accountant she meets at the community pool, swims into Patty’s life with romance on his mind. But as their friendship grows, Patty finds it hard to see beyond his extra pounds. She’s torn as Sam refuses to deal with his own overweight issues. Her heart tells her one thing, but her eyes see another. She’s not interested in an overweight boyfriend. When it comes to winning the Grand Prize in life and love, Patty has some hard lessons to learn. Will she be able to confront her fears about the kind of woman she yearns to be? Will she be able to put down the fork and give her heart a try?

From the Author

Kathleen Irene Paterka fell in love with writing (and food) at a very young age. By the time she graduated high school, she'd completed her first manuscript and she weighed 300 lbs. Though the extra pounds have long since disappeared, Kathleen still carries the emotional scars of being a former fatty. FATTY PATTY was born from the cruel teasing she endured on the school playground.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great debut novel! May 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I empathized with Patty from the first page to the last. The ice cream scene was painfully familiar to me. Patty's not a perfect heroine, and not always pretty - in her thoughts or her actions - but always entertaining. There was a lot of depth in this debut novel and a lot of emotion. I especially admired Patty's determination, and I rooted for her all through the book. The ending is one of the best I've read. It's a terrific debut and I'm looking forward to the next James Bay novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fatty Patty May 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a lovely story. Like Patty I have struggled with my weight my whole life. It tells you that love is more important then anything else in the world no matter what your size. I love that there are other books about James Bay and look forward to the next one. What a wonderful summer story. Thank you Ms. Paterka.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gritty Life-Like Read September 3, 2012
Growing up "the fat sister" I can relate to Patty in so many ways. It is hard when you see yourself as something different. Sam is such a great character and reminds me so much of my own husband. He is the perfect man who sees Patty as the wonderful beautiful person she truly is. Fatty Patty is a great debut book and although I will say there were times I wanted to put it down because I saw a bit too much of myself in Patty I kept reading in the hopes that Patty would see herself differently. Patty descends into to some dark places, for lack of a better description.

2.0 out of 5 stars Average story, unlikable character November 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm a sucker for a good transformation story. And I have to say that the author's writing is good, for contemporary fiction. But the main character was so one-sided and obsessive that it made her hard to connect with, and how she treated people made her downright unbelievably unlikable. I found it hard to get through a sizable chunk of the midsection due to patty's stupid obsession and the slow pacing. Also, the rushed resolution left me wondering if the author annoyed herself with this character and wrapped it up with a nice bow just to be done with her.

People will only relate when they are mentally ready to accept the truth behind what the author is trying to relate to the reader.until you are ready it falls on deaf ears.

3.0 out of 5 stars C+ rated... July 15, 2012
My Review

This book is the story of fifth grade teacher, Patty. She's not happy with where she's at in her life and thinks that if she gains control of her weight issues that everything else will quietly fall into place in her world. There are a lot of underlying issues in this book: bullying, shallowness, family, romance, and love. But at the heart of all of it, lies Patty's own issues with herself. She doesn't like herself much and that is what is truly hurting all those aspects of her life that she thinks will be fixed by her latest weight loss goals.

There are three main characters which revolve around Patty's life...

1. Her twin sister, Priscilla
Born only minutes apart, Patty and Priscilla are miles apart in appearance. Patty was born lively and healthy, but Priscilla was only 2 lbs when she was born. She's always on the verge of being sick, but Patty sees her as skinny and beautiful. They live together in the rambling Victorian that their mother left them which is a huge money pit. Patty wants to sell, but Priscilla refuses. Priscilla acts as Patty's conscience through a lot of the book. She tries to keep Patty on track with her diet and tries to let Patty know when she's being unreasonable about things. They don't have a happy relationship throughout the second half of the book and that indicative of how bad Patty's behavior descends.

2. Fellow 5th grade teacher, Nick
This guy is the perfect guy. He's a first-year teacher and also the high school basketball coach. He seems like a nice really good looking guy who sees Patty as the catch that she really is, but as you delve deeper and deeper into the book, you get the idea that all isn't as it seems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Patty hits the spot! August 28, 2012
This debut novel by Kathleen Irene Paterka touches on so many insecurities that women face. From the love-hate relationship with food, to measuring oneself against the impossible image of perfection portrayed in media, to the inability to believe we deserve love and respect, this story reaches deep and delivers a wonderful life-affirming conclusion. Be prepared to stay up late reading this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt and Real August 27, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I loved this book! The characters, especially Patty, felt so REAL to me. Yes, she has flaws, but that's what makes her human and allows her to grow over the course of the book. A story about a perfect person would be boring IMHO. I think a lot of people can identify with Patty's problems and insecurities (even if you don't struggle with weight) because we all deep down feel self conscious about some aspect of ourselves, don't we? Patty's struggles and bad choices made me root for her even more to find her path and discover happiness where she least expected it. FATTY PATTY is a touching romance about a real woman and real-life problems.
