Book Description

Southern Literary Studies November 1989
in "Form and Fable in American Fiction," Daniel Hoffman demonstrated the relationship between the literary imagination in America and our myths, fables, and folktales. Reasserting and deepening the thesis of that study in "Faulkner's Country Matters," Hoffman provides rich readings of "The Unvanquished," "The Hamlet," and "Go Down, Moses," and at the same time offers a moving, often profound meditation on the American sense of history as myth and myth as history. Appearing at a moment when Faulker studies are dominated by a rage for theorizing about literature, Hoffman's new book returns us to the actual source of the author's imagination.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Literature on Faulkner--already a cottage industry--is continuing to grow. As the title states, this addition focuses on Faulkner's use of folklore and fable in his fiction. The use of folklore includes some myth but centers on American lore, such as Southwest backwoods humor and tales from Appalachia. The use of fable includes occurrences from the culture Faulkner was familiar with and from Faulkner's own ancestry, from which he drew such characters as Colonel John Sartoris. Hoffman's analysis is limited to The Unvanquished, The Hamlet, and Go Down, Moses . Also, while the premise of the book is sound, further examination of lore and fable could have replaced much of the plot summary Hoffman includes. For large libraries.
