How many composers over all those years really deserve to be described as aristocrats in the most extensive sense of the term?. Mozart, Chopin, Debussy, Ravel, Mendelssohn...

But Faure has to be included in this reduced; nor would he be the least in importance of that select group.

The harmonic richness of his works, the enchanting musicianship, the serene lyricism and the enraptured spirit that nourish every one of his pieces is something worthy to mention.

His musical canvas literally hovered an empty place into the French music. Berlioz was the supreme master of great orchestral masses, the widest known composer around the world and the epitome of the Symphonic Poem, on the other hand the arrival of the Belle Epoque enhanced mostly the great stages and Camille Saint Saens erected as the next promise of the Symphonic genre as well as the renovated genre of the Piano Concerto.

But the void in what concerns to the chamber music genre was more than evident. French could not boast of an intimate composer a la Chopin, for instance, capable to reflect the spiritual essence of its age.

Faure took that coveted place and knew to preserve it until his death in 1924. He knew to stand aloof of the new tendencies and his artistic integrity had not parallel by then.

The relevance of his music was kept in mind thanks basically to Emma Boynet,Jeanne Marie Darre and specially Yehudi Menuhin who always worried by playing every time he could his almost unknown chamber repertoire. After the sixties with the arrival of pianists like Gabriel Tachino, Bruno Rigutto, Jean Philippe Collard, Grant Johansson and Aldo Ciccolini who played with febrile insistence many of his frequently neglected works.

A beautiful box set w/ cardboard sleeves, recorded originally by ECI Angel, and re-released on Brilliant Classics, without sacrificing any of the sound. This was recorded in the Salle Wagram in Paris, by French pianist Jean-Phillippe Collard
between 1973-1983. Great piano, and the right pianist to do this.
Faure is a magnificent composer who flew under the radar and never was identified with any one style. He pre-dated the "Impressionist" composers (Ravel, Debussy) and refused to follow in Wagner's German style. He is a one-off, in my opinion, and a magnificent one at that. Never get weary of listening to any of these CDs.

Wonderful, right up there with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. Seriously, mellow out and take a listen to this set, you'll hear how incredibly ethereal Faure's piano pieces are.
