The Beecham Faust, in French,
By Charlus (NYC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Faust (Audio CD)
This is the 1947 EMI Beecham Faust, with Géori-Boué as Marguérite, Georges Noré as Faust, Roger Bourdin as Valentin and Roger Rico as Mephistophélès.
None of these are great singers, but they are all good, respected figures from the Parisian scene of that time, especially Noré, an elegant Faust. Géori-Boué was a well-known beauty, but her voice was very, VERY French. Bourdin had a long career at the Opéra Comique. Rico's voice is light, but he sings cleanly and without extraneous exagerations. ALL are idiomatic and gracious, the exact opposite of most of the international dross we have seen in commercial recordings of this opera. Beecham leads with great flair and tenderness for the gentle expressivity of this score, and the recording is clear and pleasant, and very well re-mastered. All-in-all, just about the best Faust on disk, certainly since the 1930 HMV conducted by Busser, and possibly the 1912 Pathé with Léon Beyle as Faust.
