Book Description

Penguin Classics December 27, 2005
Goethe's Faust reworks the late-medieval myth of Dr Faust, a brilliant scholar so disillusioned he resolves to make a contract or wager with the devil, Mephistopheles. The devil will do all he asks on Earth and seek to grant him a moment in life so glorious that he will wish it to last for ever. But if Faust does bid the moment stay, he falls to Mephisto and must serve him after death. In this first part of Goethe's great work the embittered thinker and Mephistopheles enter into their agreement, and soon Faust is living a life beyond his study and - in rejuvenated form - winning the love of the charming and beautiful Gretchen. But in this compelling tragedy of arrogance, unfulfilled desire and self-delusion, Faust, served by the devil, heads inexorably towards destruction.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone with a taste for classic literature and/or all things macabre., December 29, 2011
This review is from: Faust: Part 1 (Penguin Classics) (Pt. 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I can't stay away from a good Faust tale and this is among my favorites. Goethe's prose and language is exquisite as most popular writers of his time. Not only did the story have a wonderful feel for the fantastic, while telling the story of what a man will sacrifice for love, but there are events ever occurring that keep the reader chuckling or at least engaged. The are certain lines in here that are timeless, realistic commentaries on the perception of love. Read, enjoy, and prepare to have your heart strings plucked.

Interesting work. Why it took decades to finish...I dunno. The contemporary feel of the translation is welcome.
