One of a kind from France,

This review is from: Faux Mouvement (Audio CD)
From the first bell-ringing notes of the first track of their first album ("L'accord parfait" on Autour de Lucie), I have been hooked on this band. It is a joyous sound, tempting and seductive. The "sound" is what is important here, and yes, the lyrics are in French, but that absolutely doesn't matter.I don't understand much French, but I do understand the message of "Faux Movement." It is all about atmosphere and mood, and singer Valérie Leulliot's enchanting voice is well worth the price of admission. Autour de Lucie stands out as my favorite Indie band. I can listen to this music all day and never get tired of it in the least. Again, don't let the French language stand in your way of enjoying this album. This sound is pure French, but accessible in any language.

Valerie Leulliot drags French music into the new millenium!,
This review is from: Faux Mouvement (Audio CD)
I swear Valerie's voice just gets better and better- sexier, smoother, dreamier and breathier with age; yet she still looks like a newborn fawn- ah bless! But of course ADL would be nothing without also without her subtle and beguiling songwriting skills, blending traditional guitar indie with triphop and a touch of jazz to create a stunning landmark French language album in soft-focus.In 'Faux Mouvement' Valerie demonstrates both an innocent childlike ingenue ('Le Salon') as well as worldweary maturity ('Sans comment' and the Saint Etienne-blessed 'Lent'), sometimes simultaneously as in the magnificent contemporary classic 'Je reviens' - all minor chords and swooning breathless vocals- that opens this treasure-chest of Gallic coffe-bar culture. Then there are the heart-rending tearladen ballads, 'La Contradiction' which could truly make Governor Arnie reach for the kleenex as well as the utterly beautiful ode-to-dejection (if you translate the lyrics) of 'Chanson de l'arbre'. So thats that difficult third album dispatched with then making ADL the best French guitar-band at the moment- can't wait to what she does next!

Seductive and enchanting,
By William Merrill "eclecticist" (San Antonio, TX United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Faux Mouvement (Audio CD)
The lyrics and liner notes for "Faux Movement" are entirely in French, but it doesn't matter. In fact, it would not be as great if it were in English. Singer Valerie Leulliot just sounds so seductive, and the band around her really clicks for the most part. This is one of those "top loaded" CDs, with the very best tracks coming in the first half of the album. "Je Suis Un Balancier" is especially wonderful, with the mysterious vibrating electric guitar chords and crunchy chorus. The sampling and sound effects are subtle but effective. Things do drop off just a little toward the end, as songs such as "La Contraction" sound pretty but are rather unmemorable. When they're good, though, Autour de Lucie are VERY good.
