5.0 out of 5 stars One of a kind from France
From the first bell-ringing notes of the first track of their first album ("L'accord parfait" on Autour de Lucie), I have been hooked on this band. It is a joyous sound, tempting and seductive. The "sound" is what is important here, and yes, the lyrics are in French, but that absolutely doesn't matter.

2.0 out of 5 stars Style without substance - in a word, dull.
Autour De Lucie is interesting primarily as a well-done oddity: a French band playing American-style Alternative/Grunge rock. Their saving grace on the previous "Immobile" and on their self-titled debut, have been their sporadic flashes of melody (imagine that - and in music, no less...) and some interesting guitar & keyboard work - the best examples being "Chanson sans...

I don't understand much French, but I do understand the message of "Faux Movement." It is all about atmosphere and mood, and singer Valérie Leulliot's enchanting voice is well worth the price of admission.

Autour de Lucie stands out as my favorite Indie band. I can listen to this music all day and never get tired of it in the least. Again, don't let the French language stand in your way of enjoying this album. This sound is pure French, but accessible in any language.

5.0 out of 5 stars Valerie Leulliot drags French music into the new millenium!, October 8, 2003
This review is from: Faux Mouvement (Audio CD)
I swear Valerie's voice just gets better and better- sexier, smoother, dreamier and breathier with age; yet she still looks like a newborn fawn- ah bless! But of course ADL would be nothing without also without her subtle and beguiling songwriting skills, blending traditional guitar indie with triphop and a touch of jazz to create a stunning landmark French language album in soft-focus.
In 'Faux Mouvement' Valerie demonstrates both an innocent childlike ingenue ('Le Salon') as well as worldweary maturity ('Sans comment' and the Saint Etienne-blessed 'Lent'), sometimes simultaneously as in the magnificent contemporary classic 'Je reviens' - all minor chords and swooning breathless vocals- that opens this treasure-chest of Gallic coffe-bar culture. Then there are the heart-rending tearladen ballads, 'La Contradiction' which could truly make Governor Arnie reach for the kleenex as well as the utterly beautiful ode-to-dejection (if you translate the lyrics) of 'Chanson de l'arbre'. So thats that difficult third album dispatched with then making ADL the best French guitar-band at the moment- can't wait to what she does next!

The lyrics and liner notes for "Faux Movement" are entirely in French, but it doesn't matter. In fact, it would not be as great if it were in English. Singer Valerie Leulliot just sounds so seductive, and the band around her really clicks for the most part. This is one of those "top loaded" CDs, with the very best tracks coming in the first half of the album. "Je Suis Un Balancier" is especially wonderful, with the mysterious vibrating electric guitar chords and crunchy chorus. The sampling and sound effects are subtle but effective. Things do drop off just a little toward the end, as songs such as "La Contraction" sound pretty but are rather unmemorable. When they're good, though, Autour de Lucie are VERY good.

4.0 out of 5 stars un tour de force musical, July 10, 2002
This review is from: Faux Mouvement (Audio CD)
Voici un album super ! Enchanting voice, beautiful lyrics and haunting music. There are just one or two songs that I'm not crazy about, but the rest is great! However, other than a couple of songs that are fantastic on this album, I prefer "Immobile."

When I first heard this album, I was blown away. I'd never heard anything like this before. Leave it to the French to surprise!! Both my girlfriend and I love this album. It's so smooth and melodic, without being pretentious. I highly recommend it. Just close your eyes and listen to that sweet music...

et encore et encore to Autour de Lucie's great album "Faux Movement". I like this album best of all Lucie's recordings. I like the moodiness of the songs and I love French lyrics and vocals. "Faux Mouvement" has just the right blend of guitars and electronica to make this CD a permanent resident in my CD player. It's a little less rocking than the "Immobile" CD but it makes for better chill out or lounging music.

Allez tout de suite et achetez cette album!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Aural Experiments, March 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Faux Mouvement (Audio CD)
If you already know Autour de Lucie, put Immobile out of your mind immediately. Whilst the opening track, "Je reviens" has a similar sound to the tracks on Immobile, the similarities stop there. The band experiments with new instruments and sounds on the balance of the album. For me, it works. It is a trippy, yet edgy melange of sounds. Within the experimentation are some exquisitely catchy melodies. It doesn't all work, but I got the feeling that the band is testing new boundaries. It has all of the melodic pop sensibilites that made Immobile such a suprisingly fresh album. Some of the stronger tracks are "Je suis un balancier" and "Sans Commentaire".

I bought this disk a year or so ago when it came out in france. now it is here in the u.s. you should buy it if you are a fan. it's more trip hoppy than any other autour de lucie album before. c'est un bon disque qui est maintenant disponible aux states. pour tous les fanatiques et non-fanatiques, plus trip-hop que les autres disques d'autour de lucie

Autour de Lucie just keeps getting better with each release. It is very understandable to me that if you are into the Euro Techno Pop fluff of Axelle Red or Mylene Farmer, then this CD might be more than you can swallow. Mylene was lambasted by her English speaking fans anyway for (gasp) releasing a more guitar-heavy recording(Anamorphosee) than her usually drowned-in-synthesized-purgatory recordings. It was her best work. Narrow-minded Techno fans may hate it, but Autour de Lucie is a great guitar-based band. The fact that they are a French band may be a novelty for their detractors, but to music-lovers they are just a great band. Yes there are some elements of trip-hop on this CD but it is done tastefully and contributes greatly to the overall listening experience. Give this CD a listen it's a goodun!
